3. Letter of the Day: Choose a letter each day and focus on it. Find items around the house that start with that letter and display the flashcard.
4. Playdough Letters: Roll playdough into letter shapes that match the flashcards, combining sensory and letter recognition activities.
5. Letter Tracing: Use the flashcards as a template for letter tracing with a finger or marker.
6. Letter Sound Sort: Sort objects or pictures into piles based on the beginning sound of the items and the flashcards.

This Match-Select-Name reading unit is based on a reading intervention method developed by Patricia Oelwein. There has been a significant amount of research done on the efficacy of this method. It is shown to be beneficial for students with exceptionalities including Down’s Syndrome and Autism Spectrum Disorder who are struggling to learn to read using phonics.

There are four stages in the method:

1 - Acquisition (Matching, Selecting, Naming)

2 - Fluency (Practice and Review)

3 - Transfer (Use of new fonts and coloured paper)

4 - Generalization (Ability to read the words in any context/format)
