Introducing Y as a Vowel Bingo – an engaging activity for students to practice decoding words with y as a long or short 'i' at the end of a word! This game is designed to help students develop their skills decoding words with y at the end!

Each of the 30 unique Bingo cards contains 24 randomly selected words with either y as a long i (cry) or y as a short i (happy) at the end.. Calling cards are also included. The 24 words are chosen from a list of 60 words, so each Bingo card has a unique combination. Bingos should be frequent but not every word appears on every card.

Students will blend the words multiple times throughout the game facilitating orthographic mapping!

Practice blending words with y at the end with a fun and engaging activity your students will be sure to enjoy!

This Match-Select-Name writing unit contains fluency support activities directly linked to the Match-Select-Name basketball reading unit. The Match-Select-Name method was presented by L. Oelwein. There has been a significant amount of research done on the efficacy of this method. It is shown to be beneficial for students with exceptionalities including Down’s Syndrome and Autism Spectrum Disorder who are struggling to learn to read using phonics.

There are four stages in the method:

1 - Acquisition (Matching, Selecting, Naming)

2 - Fluency (Practice and Review)

3 - Transfer (Use of new fonts and coloured paper)

4 - Generalization (Ability to read the words in any context/format)

The resources included in this unit support the fluency stage for the 24 words in the set. The sight words in this set are from the Pre-primer and Primer Dolch word lists. You will find a writing sheet for each word, a colouring sheet for each word, and a board game using all 24 words.

Directions

Rolling the Die:

• Students roll a six-sided die to determine which sight word they will read.
• Students can also scan the QR code on the worksheet using a device with a QR code scanner to access a virtual dice roller.

Reading the Sight Word:

• Students match the number rolled with the corresponding sight word on their worksheet.
• Students read the sight word out loud.
• Students should focus on pronouncing each word correctly and quickly.

Marking Progress:

• Once students read a sight word, they should highlight or color the box. They could also cover it with a counter or place marker etc.
• If students roll a number they have already completed, they should roll again until they land on a new sight word.
• Students continue rolling and reading until they have completed all the sight words on their worksheets.

Introducing Multisyllabic Word Bingo – an engaging activity for students to practice blending and word recognition with closed/closed syllable words! This game is designed to help students develop their skills decoding multisyllabic words with closed syllables!

Each of the 30 unique Bingo cards contains 24 randomly selected closed/closed syllable words. Calling cards are also included. The 24 words are chosen from a list of 60 words, so each Bingo card has a unique combination. Bingos should be frequent but not every word appears on every card.

Students will blend the words multiple times throughout the game facilitating orthographic mapping!

Practice blending multisyllabic words with closed syllables with a fun and engaging activity your students will be sure to enjoy!
