It’s best to introduce subtraction with regrouping using concrete manipulatives related to place value such as base 10 blocks. Using base 10 blocks is an effective way to support students in developing a conceptual understanding of subtraction because they are able to see the value of each digit in the number. This visual model helps students understand the regrouping process of exchanging 1 ten for 10 ones or 1 hundred for 10 tens.

The slides are designed for students to simultaneously model subtraction equations with base 10 blocks and the standard algorithm. Building a correlation between the equation and the physical model will help students build a strong foundation for subtraction as they move on to more advanced skills.

As the winter days wind down and the spring weather approaches, many come out of hibernation. The spring season is often a time for children to play outside, participate in outdoor sports, and just enjoy the feeling of being outside in the fresh air. However, during this warm and bright season, it can also be a time of anxiety for children. Children in the upper elementary and middle school grades typically take standardized testing, which is mandated by the state. The months of April and May can actually be quite daunting for some students, which is why this spring yoga sequence is such a great addition to children’s routine. Guided Reading is a research-based instruction process whereby the teacher works with small grouping of students being equal in a particular reading achievement level.
