Own the Beat or Take a SEAT! (Rhythm/Ear Training Game)

By Jason Litt

In Own the Beat or Take a Seat the teacher will play a four to eight beat rhythm (as displayed on the powerpoint). After teaching them the rhythm, the entire class will perform the rhythm back in unison

Then, the teacher will ask the class to repeat the rhythm a certain amount of times (1 time, 2 times, 4 times, etc)

What do students have to do? OWN THAT BEAT...!

  • Students will perform the rhythm on rhythm sticks, drums, Orff instruments, their hands, their laps, however you do it!

  • Students will have to focus on performing that rhythm exactly how it is written

  • ... and of course, focus on repeating the rhythm for the EXACT many times as stated ... or else...

TAKE A SEAT! If a student plays an extra beat or an extra part of the rhythm after the class has ended playing it, they have to take a seat (either on the floor, in the circle, on their chair, however you want to do it)

The class will then repeat the rhythm again the amount of times listed until it is played without an extra beat or part of the rhythm. The ones who took a seat are allowed to stand back up again and join the game already in progress

...Then you go to the next level!

Play the rhythm 5 times....
Play the rhythm 6 times...

_Play the rhythm 7 times....
_
(but of course if there's an extra beat... that student takes a seat, and you go back to performing where you left off to get that student back in!)

THEN ONTO THE NEXT LEVEL

Dependent on how fluent your class is, you can use this as part of a lesson, a good chunk of it, or even continue it onto the next weeks lesson to see how good they really are (and what level they can get to)

Play it with a ten minute time and keep score of which class can get the highest by the 3rd week or the 4th week?

Possibilities are endless!

Play it as is or some background music (I like to throw on some 80s, 90s, or clean pop just to get a groove going). Enjoy this game

  • A printout where you can replicate and cut out cards (if you want the students to place on the floor or hold up to show which one was the imposter)

Super Notation Bros.

By Jason Litt

The objective of this fun 8-bit game styled in powerpoint format is to have students name notes on the treble clef staff. Students each take turns naming notes as fast as possible, all in the spirit of a collaborative effort for their class. The slide carries the note in question, with a block [?]. When the student states the correct answer, the answer appears on the next slide, and repeat from there on out through the rest of the class. The faster they do this, the more they see the gameplay progress and go through different levels. We start out on the line notes, EGBDF, get into the FACE notes in the second world, and then do a mix of them in the 3rd world until the class reaches the end at 100000 points! Don't worry, a follow up product is coming soon, this is just Part 1 :) There's a 3 minute 8-bit mashup background track included in this download to play for the students to make it feel like a real video game. When the 3 minute track is over, the game ends and you can tally up their score and continue the next time in music class. Concerning management, it'd be up to the teacher to allow students to pass the note in question, or have a neighbor help them out. If you'd like to see a sped-up version of this game (don't worry, this will go slowly unless your kids are blazing fast at naming notes!), please view the link below http://youtu.be/xMufSSTh6FQ This lesson can span weeks and months depending on how often you play it and the level of mastery of notation with your kids. If you have any questions, please let me know. Have fun with this!

Can't Stop the Feeling - BUCKET DRUMMING!

By Jason Litt

Need to connect with your kids with their pop music through general music? Involve them in bucket drumming with Justin Timberlakes smash hit, "Can't Stop the Feeling"!

There are three all-color coded slides along with the form identifiers listed next to each phrase. Discuss form with the students and teach them (by rote) the rhythms on the powerpoint with the corresponding repeats (most are repeated 4, 6, or 8 times). Then, apply it to drums!

All regular notation is to be played on the buckets (or drums, or ground, however you wish), and the X notation (with a down stem) are played as stick clicks above their head (or you could apply it to a tambourine or other auxiliary instrument)

Here's the track so you can play along...

GAME ON! - A rhythm-building gaming resource

By Jason Litt

Want a great way to entice some of your boys in your general music class? Try GAME ON!, a gaming themed rhythm challenge that will suit all of your students, especially some of those gamers out there!

In “GAME ON!”, students will see a popular game or game series for multiple consoles (Xbox, PlayStation, etc)

They will then use rhythm cards provided in their “bank” of cards to build out the name of the game in a rhythm they feel best fits the name. There will be a series of one beat spaces to give the students a clue on which cards fit in which beats – be very specific as only a few cards will be chosen out of the bank

Advance the slide and find out the students’ rhythm and see if it matches the rhythm on the screen.

You can use this an assessment for all students or even see if they can identify it in a certain amount of time (10 seconds, 15 seconds, etc). Even try a boys vs girls or team vs team to see who can get it the fastest!

Included are 12 game titles and a printout of triplets, quarters, and eighth note pair cards for your students.

Have a great time with this and GAME ON!

Rhythm Star (a rhythm reading and independence game!)

By Jason Litt

Looking for a great beginning of the year activity that'll get some of your older kids involved?

In "Rhythm Star", students will see eight boxes stacked vertically. The box on the left is for their left hand, the box on the right is for their right hand. In each box will be a series of dots, either filled in, or blank.

A dot that is filled in will be one sound to the beat, a dot that is left blank will be no sound (read as a rest).

Students will read the rhythm from the top to bottom (vertically) with assigned instruments on their left hand and right hand. For this activity, Artie's stickstations come in handy, so have the students use a pad as their left implement and a tambourine as their right.

Read down the rhythms from top to bottom, and advance the slides once the class masters the rhythms with their left and right hand simultaneously! As the students progress through the game, there are 5 levels of difficulty

  1. Quarter notes

  2. Eighth notes

  3. Quarter rests

  4. Poly-rhythms (this one is FUN!)

  5. Triplets

Play this with some music in the background, either an instrumental track 100-120bpm or some of their favorite pop music as they play along and master the rhythms only to continue to advance in the level.

The class is awarded 50 points each time an example is playing correctly in unison. A fun and competitive way for your younger kids to practice sight reading rhythms!

Rhythm Star (a game for rhythm practice and independence!)

By Jason Litt

Looking for a great anytime of the year activity to get your upper grade level kids engaged? In Rhythm Star, students will see eight boxes stacked vertically. The box on the left is for their left hand, the box on the right is for their right hand. In each box will be a series of dots, either filled in, or blank (counted as a rest).

Each box represents one beat and each dot represents one sound.

Students will read the rhythm from the top to bottom (vertically) with both hands simultaneously performing the rhythms.

For this activity, Artie's stickstations come in handy, so have the students use a pad as their left hand percussion instrument and a tambourine as their right hand percussion instrument. You can situate these on the floor, table, or desk (completely adaptable!)

Read down the rhythms from top to bottom, and advance the slides once the class masters the rhythms with their left and right hand simultaneously! As the students progress through the game, there are 5 levels of difficulty:

Level 1: Quarter Notes

Level 2: Eighth Notes

BlockChain RHYTHM! - A fast-paced listening game!

By Jason Litt

This is a great resource to get your kids to work collaboratively as a team (or by themselves if you wish) to identify rhythms as they hear them!

In BlockChain Rhythm, students are given a set of 4 cubes with quarter notes, eighth note pairs, and quarter rests written on them (this is optional, but if you have these, it makes it a challenge for them if you have time to write them out!).

After hearing the rhythm example, they must "rubix cube style" arrange the rhythm that they heard in the right order that it is played. However, the first one to do it the fastest WINS!

Alternatively, you could play this by having the students write it down, have notation cards, or any other method you prescribe. Students can work together in teams of 1, 2, 4, or however may you wish.

To do it as a race: if you have a large and elongated classroom, try setting the blocks 10-15 feet away from the students. Students then have to run one by one and build each beat, go back and tag the next student, and build the second beat, and on and so forth until all four beats are completed.

There are 12 4-beat rhythm examples included in this. All you need to do is play the example and advance the powerpoint slide to show the correct answer!

Have a great time with this!

Whack-a-Note (Whack-a-Mole game!)

By Jason Litt

Channel your inner Chuck E. Cheese with this new way of learning the lines and spaces of the treble clef staff!

In “Whack-a-Note”, students will see a note shown by the farmer on the treble clef staff (either a line or a space). Then a mole or two, or three or more, will pop up with several note names (letters A through G). Students will take their trusty mallet and WHACK that mole that is showing the letter that matches the note shown.

For the mallet choice, you can use a soft stick, a boomwhacker, or purchase one or two of these here.

https://www.amazon.com/ArtCreativity-Squeaking-Pounding-Carnival-Birthday/dp/B082LRQPR2/ref=asc\_df\_B082LRQPR2/?tag=hyprod-20\&linkCode=df0\&hvadid=508104622024\&hvpos=\&hvnetw=g\&hvrand=3785513862368919503\&hvpone=\&hvptwo=\&hvqmt=\&hvdev=c\&hvdvcmdl=\&hvlocint=\&hvlocphy=9011743\&hvtargid=pla-948822472971\&psc=1

After you show the note, advance the slide and the moles will pop up. As soon as the student hits the right answer, you advance the slide and the correct mole will disappear. The game is controlled solely by the teacher by operating the powerpoint slides

You can do this individually, team vs team, or even student vs teacher!

Rhythm Sweeper

By Jason Litt

Based off the hit Windows 3.11 game we all knew and loved, Rhythm Sweeper is a progressive game where one slip can end you up on the dreaded mine! This will have your kids reading and mastering rhythms in NO TIME! Students will see a grid of 40 squares on the home page. Each square contains either a link to a rhythm.... or a mine :) I select one student at a time to pick a number. I'll then click on the number and it'll advance to the designated slide. If it's a rhythm, we add that rhythm to the Building Board on the home page. The teacher will click "Back to Game and Building Board" and put the rhythm they just received on the board. As for the rhythms they earned, you can cut out rhythms, write them in dry erase, or have a student keep tabs on the side. Students will now say, sing, or play the rhythm back. Then we repeat! See how it gets progressive? ;) ...until the mine! There are 5 mines in each game, and once the mine is hit, it's GAME OVER! At the end, you can tally up how many beats the class amassed (which is great if you can allow student to add it up as the game has half, quarter, and pairs of eighth notes). Compete against other classes, or themselves! There are 10 files in the pack and each one is completely different (all the rhythms are mixed up and of course, so are the mines) Have fun with this! I keep lively music in the background and have the kids on lummi sticks to play the rhythms back. Let me know if you have any questions by leaving a comment!

Four Square - Rhythm Identification (* Distance Learning Approved! *)

By Jason Litt

In Four Square, students will see 4 squares (A, B, C, and D) with a rhythm displayed inside the quarter and then listen to a short musical example of rhythm. The students will then have to decide which square best represents the rhythm heard.

You can elect to play it once, twice, or as many times as you need so your students get a good feel of the activity. After all the students have chosen their answer, advance the slide and reveal the answer (illuminated in green!)

When students get to the 12th example, they will be required to "re-order" the rhythms based on the square that they heard in order (A,B,C,D, D,C,A,B, C,A,D,B, etc)

You can have students write it down, play it team A vs team B, boys vs girls, or individually as an assessment, or even assign it as distance learning!

There are 19 examples with quarter notes, half notes, quarter rests, and eighth note pairs

Drum it up, Dynamically!

By Jason Litt

Ready to talk about Forte and Piano in any of your grades? Drum it up, Dynamically will get your kids reading dynamics like a pro!

First, we start off with an introduction to Forte and Piano with a clip from Music K8's animated series (included), and then get into the game:

Students are issued hand drums (or djembes, tubanos, orff instruments, rhythm sticks, whatever you wish!) and dynamics are shown on the screen. Sometimes just 4 dynamics, sometimes 6, and even up to 8. The teacher points to the dynamic (optional) as the kids play along on their instruments while the background music (included) helps them keep on beat! After the students master the dynamics, the teacher advances the slide and dynamic shifts get a little harder each time.

Halfway through the presentation are rests (indicated by blank white boxes) to get the kids to count the notes of silence in between.

Have a ball with this and let me know if you have any questions!

Three tracks at various tempi are included (slow for the little kids, and medium and fast for the bigger kids)

Rainbow Rhythms!

By Jason Litt

In Rainbow Rhythms, students will receive 8 color-coded rhythm cards. Print as many printouts as you need (ideally a class set and preferably on card stock) and issue to kids in a stack of Red, Orange, Blue, Green, Purple, Grey, Pink, and Teal after they are cut out.

You can print have 6 per page (larger cards) or 8 per page (smaller cards) dependent on how much ink you have.

If you don't have a lot of ink to spare, you can always opt to do half a class set and have the students pair up and share all 8 cards.

Students will then hear a musical example and use a few of their rhythm cards to match the example you just heard. Was it the blue rhythm and then red rhythm? Or maybe the blue rhythm and green rhythm?

Once the slide is advanced, the animation will appear and they will see the correct answer, card by card (or color by color!). Have you students check their answer and see what order their colors were!

There are 17 musical examples included with 4 beat rhythms, 6 beat rhythms, and 8 beat rhythms (2 cards, 3 cards, and 4 cards respectively)

I've also included the .png colored cards just in case you wanted to build your own in a separate powerpoint. Completely editable, even though the mp3s embedded arent. Heck, make your own :)

INCLUDED:
Rainbow Rhythm Lesson (ppt)

Rainbow Rhythm Colored Notation Cards (Master Slides)

Instructions
Printouts (6 per page landscape and 8 per page portrait)

17 musical example mp3s (linked to the powerpoint)

Working on melodic direction in your unit? Reinforce it with "Connect the Dots!", a mix and match game that challenges your students to put the melodies in the correct order as you hear them. After starting off with a brief introduction to writing a melody from Quaver Music (video included), you begin the lesson and discuss melodic motion -- melodies can go up, down, or stay the same. For the activity, there will be 10 musical examples (provided and labeled) which you will play for your students. Each example has 3 or 4 melody tiles which are out of order. After listening to the example, your students have to put the tiles in order to reflect what they hear on the example. The first slide of the series will have blank grey boxes, and the following slide will have the answer for the students to check. For my 3rd graders, I usually play them a few times, but for my 5th graders they get it right on the spot! There a few ways to have the students answer -- they can come to the whiteboard and us a dry erase to indicate, they can put labeled cards on the floor, or they can use personal whiteboards to draw on. Or you can have it boys vs. girls, and make it a timed race! Included are a powerpoint file (with special fonts and instructions for installation) and a standalone PDF in case you prefer that way. Have a great time with this, and feel free to contact me if you have any further questions or concerns!

Have the students identify the syllables in the food and match it to either rhythm on plate number 1 or plate number 2. After kids lock in their answer, advance the slide and reveal the answer! Most are eighth and quarter note rhythms, but some have eighth note triplets and 4 sixteenths group in the examples You can also play it as an assessment and have kids work individual or in teams. There's a powerpoint and PDF included in this package and there are 13 sets of foods go through and can last up to 30-45 minutes depending on what pace you go in the activity. Have a great time and of course, BON APPETITE!

Melodious Masterpiece (* Distance Learning Approved! *)

By Jason Litt

Working on melodic direction with some of your upper level students in elementary? Lock your eyes and ears onto Melodious Masterpiece, an activity which engages the kids to think, listen, and use their knowledge to determine the direction of melody!

A melody, the main tune of the piece will be played on each example (10 examples included, ranging from 3 note melodies to 8 note melodies) along with 4 corresponding trapezoids. Students will have to select which trap best represents the melody being played and the answer will illuminate green on the following slide

Students do not need to know lines or spaces of the staff or even note names -- their previous understanding just rests with melodic direction (up and down!)

Can be great as a class activity, boys vs girls, or even assigned as distance learning!

Beat Boxing - Identifying Notation Duration (* Distance Learning Approved! *)

By Jason Litt

*BUILT FOR DISTANCE LEARNING, BUT CAN USE IN CLASS AS WELL!*

You've reviewed your notation with your students, and you want to make sure they know their quarters, eighth pairs, halves, wholes, etc, right?

In Beat Boxing, it's not the imitation of sounds, rather the students will be given a number of beats… maybe 3, maybe 5, maybe 6, or 2, or 4, and so on. This will be displayed on the powerpoint slide along with boxes of different combinations of beats (progressively, there will be more options as the game goes along)

But, only ONE of them will be the answer to the number shown

Have the students identify which box of rhythms matches the number shown. Quarter Notes, Eighth Note Pairs, Whole Notes, AND dotted notes are in this series (remember, the dot adds half the value of the note that precedes it!)

In addition, there's a REMIX at the end where the boxes are reversed. Ahhh!

Have fun with this and let me know how the lesson goes :)
