This is a curriculum I use in grades 3, 4, and 5. We have a full set of violins at our school and we learn notation, rhythms, and notes through an original curriculum called "Lightning Violin". The students all learn the songs together and then an individual student plays the song by themselves for assessment. If they play it correctly, I give them a "bolt" on their chart. It gets very competitive and the students really respond well and practice as hard as they can to get their next bolt. You can make a powerpoint chart or a physical chart and draw a bolt or create one in powerpoint. Included with this are the mp3 files accompaniment files that go along with the powerpoint. This particular version focuses on learning the rhythms and notes without the aid of fingering charts or letters, which makes it a bit more challenging for students who have relied on that in the past. There are a few review slides before the songs that ensures students have everything they need to complete the program! It goes a little slower, but it's scaffolding made easy (White Belt is the easiest, Rainbow Belt the most challenging) Included with this are 9 mp3 files accompaniments (with a cool hip hop piano background!) along with the powerpoint in PDF format. Have a whole bunch of Orff instruments and want to get your kids working towards a goal to learn more music? Barz and Starz, at your service! Modeled after the "Rainbow Recorder" series, students learn 8 all-original Orff melodies set to colors -- White, Yellow, Orange, Green, Purple, Blue, Red, and Black. As the kids begin, simple rhythms and patterns are given but as they progress into the "Barz and Starz" system, melodic lines get harder with eighth notes, alternating hands, skips, and increased tempo. Student 'pass off' these compositions by playing them with the accompanied mp3s. The "starz" element is what you wish! I use this with my kids and keep a powerpoint chart and after the student plays their "star" with perfection, they earn that color star on their chart. Working on the lines of the treble clef staff? Here's a fun way to have your students use their knowledge and solve a puzzle with Mystery Word! The Mystery Word package includes 50 challenging words and/or phrases that are spelled using the musical letters (A,B,C,D,E,F, and G) of the treble clef staff. Blank letter boxes are below the note on the staff for the students to fill in. Some words and phrases are easy, but some get pretty difficult! Included are three files: The teacher version, a PDF file with 50 pages in PDF format to use as a class activity. The student version, a PDF file you can print out with 25 pages, 2 puzzles to each page you can individual give to students. (If printed out and copied back-to-back, it only runs 13 pages per booklet) The answer key (just in case a substitute teacher needs it) ;) You can use this as a warmup to your lesson, or a lesson in itself -- it makes a great substitute teacher plan as well! If you're working on melodic contours, high and low, and direction, this may be for you!

Included are 16 printable cards you can reproduce, cut out, and issue to your students.

Play these melodies on a piano, clarinet, slide whistle, however you wish! Then, ask the students to place the card which they think best resembled the melody you played.
Although there are 16 cards, you can ask students to do 4 cards a time (by telling them which cards they are to us), play the melody, and then they can choose from the multiple choice answers you allotted to them.

The image files can be put into a powerpoint as well and you can us it as an answer key after you play the melodic example.

The purpose of Rhythm War is to learn, understand, and identify rhythms upon seeing them!

Everyone will receive approximately 10 rhythm cards (printed and cut by the teacher, all rhythms included in separate quarter note, half note, whole note, fermata, and whole rest PDF documents!). Students will be then put into groups of 3, 4, or 5, scattered throughout the room around hula hoops.

Each student will sit around the hula hoop and the inside of the hula hoop will be the “playing area”. Students will count down “1-2-HIT!” and the students will take the top card from their stack of cards and put it in the middle ring.

Just like the game “WAR”, whoever has the HIGHEST NOTE VALUE, gets to collect everyone’s cards…

The students who run out of cards is out, and the students at the end who have the most win rhythm war

ALL OF THE INSTRUMENTS BELONG IN THAT FAMILY, EXCEPT FOR ONE. THE STUDENTS' GOAL IS TO IDENTIFY WHICH CREWMATE IS HOLDING THE INSTRUMENT THAT IS NOT IN THE SPECIFIED FAMILY.

In this reproducible worksheet, there are 3 pages of exercises where students will identify the names of the treble clef letters from 1st line E to top line F.

TAKE NOTE 3.0 is a treble clef note shown and the student will circle the answer they think is correct.

You may use this as an assignment, warmup, timed practice, or however way you see fit!

In a fast-paced game geared up to get your upper level elementary school students excited, we present to you "Write the Room - EMOJI Edition!"

The game is simple as ever. Scattered around your music room are 12 rhythms (which you can cut out and affix anywhere you'd like) with a corresponding emoji attached to the rhythm.

You will make teams (or play individually!) and a pair of students from each team.

You will then play a sound clip for all of the students to hear. Their job is to listen to the clip, think of the rhythm in their head, and race around the room to find the emoji with the rhythm that they just heard!

The students race back to the board and presses on the emoji they think they heard (there will be a multiple choice of three rhythms, which one of them is the correct on). You will advance the slide and the correct emoji rhythm will turn green.

Play this through 12 rounds and keep score of which team wins or you can do it as an individual assessment. The kids LOVE this as they are assessing themselves by listening to the rhythm, remembering it, and identifying it somewhere in the room.

Switching gears into November, we present to you "Thanksgiving Rhythm Compositions" for your students!

Included are two printable and reproducable 8.5x11" sheets with 9 thanksgiving themed rhythms on them. Print these out and use to have students, groups of students, or even teachers and interns compose their own rhythms!

• Compose the rhythms however you wish... 2 beats long, 4 beats long, 8 beats long, etc
  • Speak it out (to themselves and the class)
  • Play it out (rhythm sticks, drums, etc)
  • Mix it up
  • Collaborate with others
  • Turn it into a round, a canon, a two part, etc
