The 2001 movie, The Luck of the Irish makes a connection with St. Patrick's Day, and the luck of the Irish. Kyle, the main character is trying to discover his heritage and learns a few things about being Irish as he learns. Vocabulary that is learned and reviewed includes: heritage, immigrants, and heritage. Students will learn facts about Ireland and being Irish as they watch the movie.

Students will also learn about problem solving skills, working hard, following rules, working together, and being a good friend, citizen, and family member. The comprehension questions in this product relate with the movie as well as students own experiences. Students can also write sentences uses unknown vocabulary words in sentences. My students enjoyed this book because it is a book about friendship, solving problems, trying new things, and growing up as they navigate middle school. This book does not have chapters, so comprehension questions were separated by pages. Therefore, written comprehension skills are emphasized while reading.

As students are learning the 40 pre-primer sight words in this product, they will be provided with each word, an example of the word used in a sentence (along with some visuals to help them understand unfamiliar vocabulary words), and the opportunity to make up a sentence themselves using the word. I find that with my students who are Deaf/hard of hearing/ELL, when they make up sentences using the newly learned sight word, it helps them to remember how to spell the word, the meaning, and how it is used. My students love booklets of any kind that they can refer back to. Once they have come up with their sentences, they can include pictures that they print and cut out, draw pictures freehand, or find pictures in a magazine that they can add to each page of the pre-primer sight word booklet that matches each sentence they come up with. This gives students the opportunity to connect what they are learning about in the classroom with their own personal interests. This booklet is perfect for students that are on grade level as well as students who require instructional information to be adapted.

The graphic novel, Queen Bee written by Chynna Clugston is entertaining and suspenseful. This book encourages my on-level as well as struggling readers to want to read. Students will like this book at the upper elementary, middle school and high school level, because the main characters not only have the ability to show the reader their super powers, but students can also relate to the main characters as they navigate school and developing friendships as well. Upon reading each chapter, students can answer the comprehension questions with help or independently. When students are finished reading this book, they can answer the questions about their favorite character, the plot, setting, etc. as well.
