Free 3rd Grade School Counseling Activities (by date, latest first)

Resource geared towards younger students who are experiencing grief. Perhaps they lost a loved one or a pet and need to process their emotions. A perfect follow-up activity to The Invisible String story.

This resource is a great book companion to “The Color Monster.” Students will have the opportunity to engage in four different activities. 

Activities included: 

1. Writing prompt: Students will identify how they’re feeling and why. 
2. Feelings Jar: They’ll have the opportunity to draw what causes certain feelings for them.
3. Symmetrical drawing: Students will get to complete the image of the color monster 
4. Coloring page

Read the book to your students and have them discuss what they’ve heard. Following the discussion, present the activities to them. Can be great for small groups, 1:1 sessions, or whole class.

Some students on my caseload are very quiet; either because they are shy, afraid, or simply don’t know what to share. Oftentimes, it can be difficult for them to open up so I created a worksheet that allows them to decide what they feel comfortable talking about. 

Because the worksheet can also serve as a coloring page, most students tend to feel comfortable in deciding their topic of conversation. Students simply color in the heart with the subject they’d like to address. 

This worksheet works well for 1:1 counseling sessions or for teachers who notice a student having a hard time. Simply pull them to the side, or place the worksheet on their desk and have them bring it to you when they are ready.

Now more than ever, students need to be explicitly taught coping skills and calming strategies. Students need exposure to many calming strategies to learn which strategies best help them to regulate their emotions. "Building" a safe, healthy, and happy learning environment starts with the people that we share it with! In this activity, students take on the opportunity of working effectively with others, thinking creatively, communicating respectfully, and cooperation with others all built into one activity! This is a blast for the whole class - all while focusing on so many important SEL skills. This activity includes minimal preparation yet all the benefits of so many social emotional learning skills to build (pun intended!) My students did not want this activity to end!!

Leadership Activity - "Jumping Ships!" (Upper Elementary)

Order up! This adorable activity puts a focus on gratitude and thankfulness - perfect for the fall season! "Spice" it up and instruct students to decorate their "personalized order" anyway that they'd like. You could do so much with this activity - incorporate life skills by asking students to order their own drink, intertwine creativity by asking them to incorporate their own special ingredients into their drink, and then, of course, "fill it up" with all of the things that they are grateful and thankful for! So sweet and fun! This would also make a cute bulletin board as well.

The Book of... sometimes ridiculous but also sometimes funny and waaaay better than doing coursework... Icebreakers! This ice break collection can be used for all school aged children and gives a wide variety of options for different classroom personalities and expectations!

Bring having a growth mindset and positive perspective to life with this activity! It is fun for the whole class and they get a great reminder to take with them! This activity comes set with everything you need to discuss and demonstrate having a growth mindset, perspective taking, and holding a positive point of view. It also pairs nicely with the short story (Rosie's Glasses), but can be used as a stand alone activity as well!

Talk about "which view would you choose" and then have students color away! Depending on the amount of time you have, have students cut out their glasses and glue the rectangles together, or use it as a fun take home follow up activity!

Community building activities come in handy at the start of the year... and beyond! This activity focuses on not only working together and building community, but also allows students opportunity to practice active listening skills with a focus on listening to understand and absorb information rather than listening to respond. This activity is great for the basics of get to know you and team building questions, but could also be used to answer more academic-based questions as well. It is fun, interactive, and engaging, which offers a fun change of pace to the classroom!

"Caught Ya Being Respectful" is a fun and engaging activity that not only gets students talking about being respectful and what that looks like, but it also encourages them to make connections of people (that they know and often admire!) that are showing respect around them as well!
