My "big" kids in grades 5 and 6 have been struggling with their French sounds - both basic and complex - and we're backtracking! However, because of their unique needs, I was struggling to find texts at their level that featured these complex sounds - in excess - for them to practice, see in real life and to work with them in guided readings or 1:1. I was finding myself scouring my shelves for books that had ample opportunities for them to see and practice a certain sound and wasn't having success; so I decided to create texts that hone in on specific sound formations they're struggling with, have never properly learned, or have forgotten. They are texts which feature vocabulary at the grade 5-6 instructional level.

I was also tired of running back and forth from my literacy lab to find reading records and wanted to have them printable from my classroom. If you're in a similar boat, this is the product for you!

This collection features 44 pages of resources:

- 12 texts (student version to be printed and used in small groups or 1:1)

- 12 texts (teachable version with sounds highlighted, or for differentiated instruction)

- 12 "fiches" to use as a fiche d'observation/fiche d'évaluation en littératie in a 1:1 setting featuring columns you're used to seeing (Erreurs, autocorrections, S | St | V strategies, Fluidité, Date, Nom de l'évaluateur et nom de l'élève). I've also provided you with a handy accuracy calculator so you don't need to pull out your calculator for each individual text. These end-of-year award certificates are conveniently in black and white for easy, no-prep, no expense printing. 30 eye catching awards in 2 different themes means there are 60 awards to choose. You can print on white paper, coloured paper, coloured cardstock, or have students colour them in themselves. My decision to do this is in response to so many teachers having strict colour printing budgets at their schools. I wanted to find an economical way of printing these, so teachers did not have to break the bank!

What to do:

Make copies of the awards that you would like to use, either by printing an entire set or by selecting the ones you want for printing.

Insert colour paper, white paper, or cardstock for easy printing

Fill in the child’s name that you would like to honour for the award along with date and your name.

Who can use this resource:

French Immersion teachers in the K-3 classroom and those teaching beginner French students. Can be used at the Grade 4-6 level with Core French students learning to segment and blend complex sounds.

What grade level:

I personally use these texts with Grade 1 and Grade 2 students in French Immersion. I feel confident that students from K-3 will find these most useful and teachers can come back to the texts with any students who may be experiencing challenges in their French reading skills. Writing prompts are the fast and easy No-Prep way of adding to your K-2 writing program. Aligned with the Science of Reading, students engage decoding and encoding skills. The vocabulary used in this resource follows a progression recommended by many school boards and is in lock step with what is being promoted by IDAPEL and ONLit websites for teaching French language in today's classrooms.

Once you have a grasp on all the simple sounds in French, the magic happens when you get students writing. They don't even notice that all the words used are from their very own memory banks and are all decodable words from past lessons.

Who can use this resource:

Teachers who are just getting accustomed to using strategies from the Science of Reading can use these simple texts to open up independent practice, small group evaluation, or up on a digital screen for whole group instruction and reading practice.

Make a set and send them home with students to build fluency in writing and confidence in writing strategies.

The prompts are designed to offer many variations for students to use their imaginations and to build confidence in their own writing.

Correction sheet is handy for use with a substitute as they can confidently assess students and command the lesson even when they are not assured of their French skills.

The theme of this French writing prompt unit is "La personne que j'admire le plus . . ." This five day French writing program is suitable for immersion and core programs. The unit includes five pre-writing and writing activities for a whole week. These writing prompts are a great way both to introduce and to review writing in French.
