This lesson is an introductory lesson for equivalent fractions and focuses on helping students visually and conceptually understand what it means when two fractions are equivalent. Starting with the basics, this lesson is a solid foundation for first teaching equivalent fractions or reinforcing the concept.  

The lesson focuses on the use of visual models to identify fraction equivalence, and it does not include teaching the algorithm for generating equivalent fractions.  ​​Fractions with denominators: 2, 3, 4, 6, 8, & 12 are used in this lesson. STEAM Challenge - Design a parachute for Santa to land safely in the event of a crash landing.

Premise: the NTSB requires that Santa have specific safety gear in order to be able to fly on Christmas Eve. Students are to design a parachute that will get Santa safely and slowly to the ground.

This anchor chart meant to help your kids understand how we classify shapes into categories based on their attributes, a polygon hierarchy made different! I made a polygon family tree that groups polygons into families and subgroups. This helps kids see the relationships more clearly without using arrows.

This resource is well organized and it visually shows the relationships between the multiple different classifications of the polygons, triangles and quadrilaterals. It is a must have to all kinds of learners.

Shapes included:

• Non-Polygons: Circle, Moon shape, Heart, ...
