WOW! Two different options for the same book! How fun – QR Codes and Poke Cards. Both are favorite activities for the students in my classroom. Henry and Mudge The First Book poke cards are a great independent, partner or guided reading group comprehension activity. Henry and Mudge books are a just right beginning chapter book for second grade students. Students in small groups quickly make connections to Henry and his big, loveable dog, Mudge. The poke cards are self checking. After reading each chapter, students will answer each question by selecting one of three choices. Using a pencil, straw, or pipe cleaner, students will poke through the hole to choose their answer. The correct answer will have a mark above or around the hole. The poking process quickly engages the students and provides immediate feedback to them. As with the poke cards, the QR code cards are self checking. My students love using our classroom iPods or iPads to check their answers. Cards have chapter titles on them for ease of organization. Cards are labeled poke cards or QR code cards. Answer key is included and clearly labeled. Teacher Preparation: -For QR and poke cards - Print on light colored card stock for durability. -For poke cards - Using a hole punch, at each * punch a hole. -On the back of the poke card identify the correct answer by drawing a circle around the hole or marking an X above the hole. -Laminate for durability. Aisha, a 13-year-old girl living in Gaza city, chronicles her experiences through a diary during a period of intense conflict between Israeli forces and Hamas militants in Gaza. As bombings, power outages, water shortages, and infrastructure damage disrupt daily life, Aisha describes her fears for her family's safety and her disrupted education. She finds resilience through community support and small acts of normalcy like playing games with friends. Temporary ceasefires provide glimpses of peace amid the violence. But tensions frequently boil over into clashes and protests at the border, unleashing new rounds of bombardment. Aisha conveys the mental and physical toll of living through endless cycles of war and deprivation in Gaza.
