This printable kids' game includes 10 riddles and hiding spots for kids to venture around the classroom looking for clues. Each riddle reveals a new hiding spot and code word. Gameplay: 20-30 minutes Ages: 7-10

This fun and engaging classroom mystery quest will be a huge hit for kids ages 7 - 10. HOW IT WORKS: A “secret mission” is read, and Clue # 1 is handed to the “treasure seeker, " leading to Clue 2 in a different location. All you have to do is print the clues, cut them in half, and hide them in the classroom exactly as directed! All hiding spots are common classroom locations. How long does this activity take to complete?

It really depends on a lot of things. Estimated completion time is 20 minutes but it’s based on the kids’ riddle skills, group size, and age. It is also HIGHLY based on how difficult it is to find the clue cards. We always suggest folding the riddles and hiding them really well, out of plain sight!

How many kids can play at once?

Kids can play individually, with friends, or with their siblings. For a larger group, you’ll likely want to print and hide multiple copies of each clue.

How do I set up the Scavenger Hunt?

To set up the Scavenger Hunt, you will need to cut the clue cards in half and hide them in the appropriate location. The PDF includes the correct hiding spots for each clue. All hiding spots are common household places such as under the bed, bathroom sink or in a closet. The harder the clues are to find, the more fun the kids have! If clues are hidden in plain sight, the hunt would be completed too quickly.

Where do kids begin?

You may begin in any location of the classroom. Together, the “mission” is read out loud to get your kids hooked. Kids are then handed the first clue card. Each clue card contains a riddle that will lead them to the location of the next clue.

How do I set up the activity?

Just print, cut, hide and play! Everything you need is included in your download.

Do I have to print out the game materials for every kid?

Nope! You ONLY have to print out the answer sheet for each kid or group. Just one set of the actual clue cards is all you need!

This is the ultimate 5th grade math vocabulary game inspired by Taboo < (click for video directions on how to play Taboo). This game will encourage students into using higher level vocabulary in an engaging way while reviewing TEKS inspired vocabulary and their definitions.

This resource includes a google doc packed with a whopping 210 essential math terms and their crystal-clear definitions. Students can use the list and study before playing the game and boosting their mathematical literacy! Also included, is a blank log with all the words where students can write the definitions in their own words throughout the year or as an end of the year review.

What's Included

• One vocabulary game inspired by Taboo < click for video directions on how to play taboo
• One 5th grade math teks aligned vocabulary list with 210 words and their definitions
• One blank log with just the vocabulary words and a blank space for students to add their own definitions

Directions

1. Students are put into small groups with an even number of players.

2. Each group is split into 2 teams.

3. The clue giver will start a 1-minute timer and turn over a card so nobody can see. (colors don't matter)

4. The clue giver now says words (not sounds or gestures) to get their team to guess the word at the top of the card.

5. The clue giver cannot say any of the words (or forms of the words) listed on the card. Formations include: abbreviations, tenses (past, present, future), initials, spelling, letters, sounds like, rhyming, smaller version words, compound words.

6. Teammates can guess as many words as possible before the timer runs out.

7. The clue giver may pass on a word and place it in a discard pile.

8. If the clue giver uses an illegal word, the opposing team who is monitoring, can sound a buzzer or shout the word "AVID." Then the clue giver must place the card in the discard pile and try a new word.

9. When the timer is done the team will count up how many points earned based off of how many words were guessed correctly. The opposing team gets one point for each card placed in the discard pile.

10 . Switch teams and repeat. The team with the highest points, wins!

Winter break has come to an end and students will soon fill the seats of your classroom. Use this icebreaker activity when your kiddos return in January to engage your learners before diving back into the meat of things!
