I created this rubric to help my middle students know what is expected of them when completing a journal writing prompt for a personal narrative. Often times, my students take advantage of free writing and do not think of it as a "real grade." Giving them something to base their writing off of gives them more direction and motivation to turn in their best work, while also sticking to their personal story/experiences.

*This was intended for, BUT IS NOT LIMITED TO, the global pandemic COVID-19 experience. My students are given a weekly prompt via Google Classroom as well as this rubric to follow.

This document includes two half-page writing checklists that students can use to self evaluate their writing pieces. The grading rubric is simple and easy to follow. It allows students to grade themselves on a four point grading scale based on writing quantity, quality, and neatness.
