Geography, Big Australia Bucket List (PowerPoint + Travel Activity) Cultural Study

A zip file reader will be needed to open the compressed file.
Students will work in teams — this can be done individually as well but will take a little longer regarding time — to take make a bucket list of places they would like to visit in Australia. They will take a journey to those places (through online resources, books and magazines) and will keep a travel journal of all the places they have visited. Students will enjoy working together and discovering interesting facts about Australia—Down Under. It will allow students not only to enjoy Australia but review the geographical themes as well as learn about the culture.
Materials + Preparation:

· 10 Journey Cards for Exploration—1 set per team
· Arrange the room where students can work in teams
· Access to the Internet, books, and magazines for research on Australia
· Printer for students to print out, color, or draw locations visited on their journey
· Grading rubric.

· To explore the natural and human features of Australia.
· To investigate how Australia can be represented on a map as states and territories.
· To investigate the geographical location of capital cities and regional centers around
Australia.
· To identify and locate landmarks and physical features of Australia.

Australia Geography — Australia Boomerang Review Game

LET'S BOOMERANG!
This fun review game allows students to "boomerang" questions to other teams.
Includes PDF with Word document
OBJECTIVE:
o The learner will gain a better understanding of the history of the boomerang.
o The learner will review the geographical characteristics of Australia.
o The learner will review the history and culture of Australia.
PREPARATION & MATERIALS:
o Arrange the classroom so that the learner(s) will have an easy time working in groups of three.
o Print, cut out, and laminate the boomerang game pieces. There are blank boomerang cards for additional or replacement questions + answers.
o Designate a location in the room or on the board where you can write the names of each team with enough space for boomerangs to be placed underneath the name as the game progresses.
o Painter’s tape or other adhesives that can easily be removed from the board or wall.
INTRODUCTION: (5 -10 minutes)
If possible, borrow or purchase a boomerang for this lesson to have for a visual. If you have time at the end of the lesson, you may choose to take the students outside and demonstrate throwing it.

“How many of you have ever seen or used a boomerang?”
Allow students to answer. Show the students a boomerang and explain a little of how it works and what it is or has been used for in the present and past.
INTRODUCTION VIDEOS: (OPTIONAL)

Please note that links often change. If you find this happens. please type in the title of the video in a search engine or on YouTube; it should be easy to locate via the new link. Unfortunately, there is no way around this issue. In this case, you can do a search on how to find state laws.
PROCEDURE: (30 minutes)
Students will be assigned teams of three (3). Allow students three (3) minutes to give their team a name such as the “Mighty Wings.” Write the names of each team on the board.
Tell the students they will be playing a game “boomerang” to review the study of Australia in which they will be “boomeranging” questions to other groups. (Additional instructions provided with purchase.)
At the end of the game, the team with the most points wins.
CLOSURE / EVALUATION: (10 minutes)
Class discussion: Display one question at a time whether it is on an overhead or smartboard.
If you have time at the end of the lesson, you may choose to take the students outside and demonstrate throwing it.

This product is over the facts, landmarks, and physical features of Australia. This product has 3 parts - (1) Australia Facts, (2) Australia Landmarks, and (3) Australia Maps. Students will answer the questions about facts and landmarks of Australia and then will label 2 different maps with physical features and landmarks. Can be used in Google Classroom, in Nearpod or Pear Deck, or as a Gallery Walk.

Present The Big Australian Bucket List PowerPoint.
How the PowerPoint Works: The second slide after the introductory slide will have a grid with 9 images. Each image is linked to a separate slide. Allow students/class to choose which photo on the grid to visit first, then second, and so on. Each will have a number from the student to choose to make it easy to decipher. Once the image is clicked, it will take you to a slide within the PowerPoint that will provide information regarding Australia. Once you have visited it, click the back arrow to return to the grid and allow students to choose another image to explore. Continue until all 9 images have been explored.
Note: the lesson says it will take 30 minutes to present but at the most it will take 15 minutes.
