6th Grade Computer Science & Technology Excel Spreadsheets (by date, latest first)

Are you looking for an introductory activity to Coding that can easily be upgraded to extensive coding or robotic programming? This will activity will take you step by step to creating a "city" in EXCEL (we actually recreated the city that we built in our classroom, but you can just create it in EXCEL) and then shows you how to CODE out of the city. With the help of snip tools and pens, you have numerous coding challenges for Warm-Ups or Coding Extensions. Since we actually built the city, students applied what they coded to actual programs on the robots. It was a great experience!!

Learning about the Stock Market using Microsoft Excel lets middle schoolers see how an investment can grow and change, as well as the importance of thorough research. Utilizing Microsoft Excel, students “purchase” and track several stocks over a 6 week period. They have the opportunity to sell stocks or hold them, depending on the market research they do. Using a template they create in Microsoft Excel, they will track the increases and declines in their stock investments and see how much they can make their initial investment grow during the 6 weeks. This lesson is intended for beginning Excel users and was created using Microsoft Excel 2013. It is easily adaptable for different versions.

Redesign a Bedroom using Microsoft Excel gives students an opportunity to research items to totally redesign their bedroom and then, working with a given budget, to create a Microsoft Excel spreadsheet budget of those items. This is a great project to do with students who have a beginning knowledge of Microsoft Excel to reinforce those skills. Which group can create the best possible classroom, using a given budget and the size constraints of the existing room? Redesign the Classroom Project lets middle schoolers work in a small group to be the architect and interior designer as they measure the existing classroom, determine what new items to purchase, and then arrange their resources into the best possible learning environment.

This project reinforces measurement, math and accuracy skills as students use their imagination and creativity. After taking the measurements, each group brainstorms what they will purchase with their budget and creates a Microsoft Excel spreadsheet (or Google Sheets) to show how they will spend their money. Next, they draw their floorplan to scale (on graph paper, using Web 2.0 tools (www.floorplanner.com or www.homestyler.com ) or Sketchup (a free download available at: http://www.sketchup.com/download) and then arrange the furnishings of the room to the best advantage. Next, students combine their work into a Microsoft PowerPoint (or Google Slides) presentation to explain and showcase their choices. Finally, students reflect on their learning, both about the project and about the success of their team. Note: This lesson is intended for beginning Excel users and was created using Microsoft Excel 2016. It is easily adaptable for different versions and an earlier version template is included.

This project was created for grades 7 and 8 but would be appropriate for upper elementary or high school students as well.

The “What Will My Car Cost?” project allows students to build skills in Internet research and critical thinking as they research costs for a car and then compute and compare payment options using Microsoft Excel. First, students research the cost for two car options (one used and one new) and then compare financing and payment options for these using formulas in Microsoft Excel. This lesson assumes student already have beginner skills with Microsoft Excel including knowing these basic commands: entering and editing information, basic cell and text formatting, changing column width, creating a basic formula (SUM, AVERAGE, basic math), adding a row or column, changing page settings, printing, and creating a basic chart/graph. Each lesson has a short, step-by-step tutorial that includes screenshots to walk students through the new tools they will use in the lesson. Then, they are given a creative task to solve, using those skills to create a spreadsheet. There are four lessons, each taking no more than two class periods.

Versions of the lesson are included for MS Excel 2013/2016, and Office 365 (MS Excel 2019).
