This Figurative Language Short Passage BUNDLE includes every passage set in my shop with 3 close reading and writing worksheets each! ***Answer Keys Included!

Figurative Language Short Passage Sets are a no-prep, printable close reading activity that's perfect for middle school and high school. Each passage has between 206-226 words and is filled with between 14-19 examples of figurative language, such as hyperbole, metaphor, simile, and personification. I’ve found that although my students can tell me the definition of these terms, simile is the only one they can truly pick out in a text. As a result, their writing is filled with overused similes that need work! These figurative language passage sets are rigorous, use higher-level words and phrases, and in addition to merely identifying the different types, students will be asked to discuss the impact it has on the reader, as they’re asked to do on standardized testing. Simply print and go! There is truly no preparation needed, which is why this set is perfect to leave for sub plans, bell ringers, homework, test prep, review or assessment!

Four Corners Figurative Language Activity is a fun whole-group game or review activity. Your students will love moving around the room as you click through the 40 examples of figurative language, such as hyperbole, metaphor, simile, and personification. CONTEXT CLUES is an important skill that students must master in order to improve and enhance their comprehension of texts. When coming across an unknown word, a student can use other words in the text that are usually in the same sentence or nearby sentences that provide clues to the meaning of the unfamiliar word. This skill is especially important for students to apply not only on state exams, but to any text or reading they come across.

It involves observing a situation, then using clues with background knowledge to figure out what has happened or what is happening. The ability to make social inferences is an essential social skill. ▶️ This is an comprehensive Picture Inference Lesson PACKET that includes at least eight activities where students can practice the skill of social inferencing using pictures that are relevant to this day in age. There are a total of 10 pictures that students will use to make inferences. Students have multiple opportunities to observe a social situation and combine picture clues and their background knowledge to figure out what is happening. Students can make inferences about how the people in the pictures are feeling, what they are doing, what they may be thinking, and what situation they may be in.

• Role-Playing: Students can collaborate in pairs or groups to act out a variety of scenarios and demonstrate appropriate responses. Role-playing activities can also be used to show how "response" skills are used improperly and then asking the 'audience' to help reenact properly. This activity can ultimately improve confidence, communication, and assertiveness skills and further help students understand the difference between appropriate and inappropriate responses to people's body language and gestures.
• Play Writing Exercise: Students can work in groups to create skits or scenes related to body language then perform the skit for the class.
• Writing Response: Students can be given a scenario to read and then write their responses. Students can switch papers with a partner who then reads their responses and determines whether they agree/disagree with their responses/approaches to these real-life scenarios.
• Discussion: Students can discuss the Body Language / Non-verbal Communication Scenario Task Cards in groups or whole class. They can discuss things like “What would you do?”, “Why would you do that?”, and “What are some other options you could consider?”

Making Inferences is a challenging skill to master, especially for lower-level students. This resource includes two sets of Picture Inference Task Cards (80 cards in total) that are differentiated to meet the needs of both lower-level and higher-level students. The pictures in these task cards are very relevant as students "see" these everyday images almost anywhere they go!

DESCRIPTION

▶️ The first set of 40 cards, which are the color RED, have pictures that students can use to make inferences. These RED Picture Inference Task Cards include guiding questions to help lower level students make inferences.

▶️ The second set of 40 cards, which are the color GREEN, have the SAME pictures that students can use to make inferences, but without the guiding questions. Instead, this set of Picture Inference Task Cards read: “What can you infer from this picture?” and “Why do you think that?” These questions require high-level students to think for themselves as they pay close attention to picture details.

They can also be used to discuss the importance of details and how they are used to encourage inferential thinking. You can even use these task cards to discuss the difference between relevant picture details and irrelevant details. 3. Exit Slips - You can use these Picture Inference Task Cards as Exit Slips by distributing 1-2 task cards to each student to complete and hand in to you before they leave.

In this activity, each student begins a story inspired by a unique Christmas picture or photograph. With this intrinsically engaging activity, each student has the chance to tap into their creativity while applying knowledge of the 7 steps of Freytag's Pyramid. It is a great activity to introduce or reinforce the plot diagram and is perfect for getting students in the Christmas spirit. Since it runs itself, the lesson is also great for substitute plans or on those days when you need a quick plan to get you through the day. I trust you will find that your students will ask for this activity again and again!
