This 71-page no-prep, no planning document has everything you need to introduce your students to geography, cartography, mapping and navigation - En Français!

This cross-curricular pedagogical document will provide you with a 37-page slide deck, complete with terms, definitions, examples, discussion prompts, images, games and activities. It also includes a 33-page student workbook complete with printable worksheets, activities, partner work, research, a final project as well as answer keys, a final project rubric and success criteria.

My slides are never babyish and are suitable for grades 4 through 7. They are suitable for students "en adaptation scolaire," or as a simple introduction to concepts covered in grades 5-7. I teach grades 5 and 6, and this works wonderfully for us!

The first half of the document is your teachable slide deck. In it, you'll find:

• A "Would you rather" style game as a warm up!
• A reflection question.
• A discussion prompt to illicit prior knowledge.
• An in-depth look at some of the earliest maps, their history, their evolution, their purpose, the material used and the process behind them.
• A look at modern mapping and their multiple uses, multiple purposes and multiple features.
• An explanation of scale and "scaling" a map.
• An in-depth look at grids, reticles and the map network with an emphasis on lines of longitude and latitude, the poles, the equator and the meridian.
• Discussion prompts about the measurement of diameter on our spherical planet.
• A look at the different hemispheres (N, S, E and W.)
• Group discussion prompts about continents and how we read a map of the world.
• Fun Facts about the Canadian provinces.
• Explanations (with visuals!) of different reference maps (physical and topographic).
• A comparison of "good" maps and "bad" maps and the need to be precise and to follow specific criteria when it comes to map-making.
• An activity on labeling Canada.

In addition to the Slide Deck, you'll find a student workbook with loads of printable activities that are excellent to leave with a substitute teacher or to use yourself. It comes with a "cover page" for their binders or duo-tangs. In the student workbook, your students will find:

• A jigsaw activity using Google Maps (group activity)
• A visual aid that highlights different components of a map with examples.
• "Comment utiliser une échelle?" - An activity to practice measuring distance using scale.

A fun social studies and geography activity for your students to learn about Christmas traditions and cultures around the world. Appropriate for all ages, from middle school through high school. This can be used in all social studies classes and makes a great holiday & winter break activity. Not only will students have fun with this Christmas geography activity, but they will be learning. Every moment is a teaching moment**.**

Students will work in collaborative groups. Each team will need a whiteboard to write their answers on. Each "Hint" slide includes five hints, one displayed at a time until all hints are presented. Each team will be given 10 seconds to write their answer on answer on the board. When the teacher says, "Jingle bells." All teams show their answers. Each team that guesses the correct answer will receive a token.

Note: A map for each team may be of some help. Have fun! I know your students will. For middle school and high school.

INSTRUCTIONS:

• Students will be assigned a team.
• As the hints appear on each slide, teammates will determine what country to which the hints are referring.
• You will write your answer on your whiteboard.
• Once all 5 hints are presented, you will have 10 seconds to write the name of the country on your whiteboard.
• The instructor will say “Jingle Bells,” communicating that you may show your answer.
• Each team that gets the answer correct will receive a token.
• At the end of the trivia game, the team that has the most tokens wins!

Understanding the Four Economic Industries + Community Service Project

This cooperative learning economics industry and factor of production lesson addresses the four economic industries: Primary, Secondary, Tertiary, and quaternary Industries. A nation's economy can be divided into various sectors. Understanding these is important in understanding how our nation's economy works. Your students will have fun learning a lot about these industries!

A community service project is incorporated into this lesson. Students bring in food items such as cereal, canned goods, or anything that can be donated to a community food pantry. Make arrangements with the local food pantry to drop off or pick up the items. The items will be used for the lesson.

Students will use higher-level thinking skills to demonstrate how a product can begin in a Primary Industry and end up in the Quaternary Industry, and how each industry can play a vital part in how products are made and distributed.

This lesson includes:

Once he dies in 1979, China had to look at the population issues as there was a shortage of housing and resources— and they were continuing to multiply. Something had to be done, so the government enforce Martial Law and only allowed families to have one child.

However, now the One-Child Policy has created a downward shift in population, and as the older generation dies, the population is declining at significant rates. In 2016, to encourage population growth, China's government put in to play the Two-Child Policy pleading with its citizens, "Please have a second child". When that wasn't working, in 2021, they pass a Three-Child Policy.

This lesson examines and compares China's Child Policy Acts throughout the years and their effectiveness, also giving students the opportunity to provide their opinion of various scenarios.

OBJECTIVES:

• Understand the guidelines of the One-Child Policy Act, Two-Child Policy
  Act, and Three-Child Policy Act
• Examine the cause and effect of China's child policy acts
• Determine the effectiveness of each of China's child policy acts
• Understand Population Density

Divide students into groups/teams of three. Give each team member an article to read:

This second set of bell ringers asks students to use their class atlases to read maps, graphs, and charts such as map projections, climate maps, time zone maps, population pyramids, and more. Although they are specified for the first six weeks, they can be used at any time throughout the year. The atlas used for reference is the Rand McNally 6th Edition found on Amazon for $15 found here. But many atlases can be used and are more affordable here. If you use another atlas, simply modify each slide to reference the map or page in the atlas you are using. The questions can remain the same.

Not only are these geography warm-up activity bell ringers for the beginning of class great transitions to start class and get students mentally ready for class, but it's also a great way to work in time for state test prep activities without all the extra work**.** Many of the social studies test questions require students to read, examine, and analyze maps, charts, graphs, etc. I have used bell ringers for years and I have seen an increase in students' abilities to read maps, graphs, and charts. It's worth your time and theirs!

This fifth set of bell ringers asks students to use their class atlases to read maps, graphs, and charts such as map projections, climate maps, time zone maps, population pyramids, and more. Although they are specified for the first six weeks, they can be used at any time throughout the year. The atlas used for reference is the Rand McNally 6th Edition found on Amazon for $15 found here. But many atlases can be used and are more affordable here. If you use another atlas, simply modify each slide to reference the map or page in the atlas you are using. The questions can remain the same.

PREPARATION:

o Divide students into teams of two.

o Prepare a sample of graphics to present via overhead projector.

o Gather newspapers, magazines, the Internet, etc.

INTRODUCTION:

At this time provide each team with a list of the 7 Propaganda Techniques and discuss the purpose of each. Explain to the student that there are various ways and techniques that companies, government, religious organizations, newscasters, etc.

POWERPOINT CHALLENGE

Present the PowerPoint. Ask the students to take a look at the image. What do they see? Are there any strong words, name-calling, transfers, etc. Ask students what message is being sent through the propaganda image. Have them vote on what type of propaganda technique is being used. You may want to write each technique on the board and have them raise their hands in the voting process. Write down the number of students who voted under each strategy. Once the vote has been taken you may reveal the answer and explain why.

Tell students that in the 1980s a band called Living Colour wrote a song called the Cult of Personality addressing propaganda. Provide each student a copy of the lyrics (Included). You may choose to allow students to listen to the audio or view the video. Warning: In the 1980s,

stage bands often wore tight spandex that may not be appropriate for some ages. This song is extremely easy to find for free on the Internet.

As they listen to the song, have them write down what they think the song is saying, what types of propaganda are being used, etc.

INDIVIDUAL ACTIVITY:

The learner will work in his/her group (Two per group as noted above). Make sure each team has a poster board. Explain to the class they will work in their teams to create a propaganda poster based on two entities:

(1) A topic from a magazine, newspaper, or Internet article regarding anything related to geography and culture and

(2) A type of propaganda technique drawn from the bag that the instructor will pass around the room.

For instance, a team may draw out of the propaganda technique bag “bandwagon” and may choose the topic of fracking based on an article from a newspaper. The team will create and design a propaganda poster supporting or opposing fracking using the bandwagon technique. This will require higher-level thinking; therefore, the instructor may need to assist students through the thinking process once they determine their topic.

Guiding questions may be: (You may want to write these on the board or somehow display them to help guide students)

1. After reading the article do you support or oppose (insert chosen topic)?

2. What is the propaganda technique are you using?

3. Who is the individual or character related to your topic that you are going to include in your poster?

Students will work in teams — this can be done individually as well but will take a little longer regarding time — to take make a bucket list of places they would like to visit in Australia. They will take a journey to those places (through online resources, books and magazines) and will keep a travel journal of all the places they have visited. Students will enjoy working together and discovering interesting facts about Australia—Down Under. It will allow students not only to enjoy Australia but review the geographical themes as well as learn about the culture.
