This is a fun and easy activity for your classroom. Students will write two holiday Haikus. They can write about Christmas, Kwanza, Hanukkah, Las Posadas, Winter, December, etc. The instructions tell them how to correctly write their own Haiku and then there are two examples. Students then will write 2 of their own Haikus.

This document asks students to make a Text-to-Text connection between "Two Kinds" by Amy Tan which appears in the 7th grade Pearson anthology my school uses and the poem "Push" by Marty Schoenleber. The two pieces are perfect for a dual-text-analysis.

The document begins with questions about "Two Kinds". It moves on to the full text of the poem, and asks students to apply the ideas expressed in the poem to the characters in "Two Kinds". Finally, students will complete a paragraph response synthesis question.

I have provided the full text of the poem, but you can also watch the poet performing his piece "spoken word style" at https://www.youtube.com/watchv=POKvyjfI22Q . My students thoroughly enjoyed watching the poet perform his work, and I think it really brought more meaning to the Amy Tan piece.

Completed with a partner, students will analyze how writers use metaphors in poetry by looking at examples. The PDF provides multiple examples to guide students. Writing a Ballad Stanza Poem can be a fun and interesting project for your students. Students will learn what a stanza and a verse are, what poems are called when they have a different amount of lines. Students will also learn what is included in a ballad stanza poem and which lines rhyme. 1.      Same Picture Four Settings- Students are given a partial character drawing and asked to draw that character in four different settings. There are two ways to complete this assignment. I have provided a list of possible settings to draw out (students would pick these out of a hat/bowl, OR they could choose four from the list to use).

2.      Describe the Setting-Five different pictures are given. You can give it to students at random or give it to all five students. Their instructions are to (using complete sentences) describe the setting.

3.      Setting for any book- Use this chart to help students fill out their knowledge of the setting of any book.
