• Discussion Question Handouts (x9): Thirty pages of higher-order discussion questions guaranteed to inspire profoundly thoughtful class discussions! This unit features double-sided handouts with 8-10 questions for each of the book's 9 chapters. The discussion questions are the beating heart of these lesson plans. Word Meaning with Nonsense Words

Why teach word meaning through nonsense words (context clues only)?

• Students must use critical thinking to solve
• Students must read the whole passage for context clues
• Students must problem solve to find the best word that makes the most sense.
• They can't find the answer except through problem solving.

All of these are things we want every student to do! This is something that is already adapted for high and low learners.

Starting with three nonsense words gets students going so they can work in groups or independently to decode the meaning of 7 REAL words (selected from the SAT vocabulary list).

This is a perfect activity for group problem solving and critical thinking!

This is a novel study of Gary Paulsen's Hatchet. In this product, there are completed lesson plans (and a blank one if you need to write your own), a slideshow that includes everything for each chapter (introduction, review of content, copy of the doodle notes, copy of the end of chapter activity/discussion outline, and the closure question), the Doodle Notes outline for each chapter, and the End of Chapter/Discussion activities. This novel study is for 4th-grade to 7th-grade students.

In this novel study, students will practice central idea/supporting details, writing summaries, citing evidence from a text, making inferences, analyzing figures of speech, describing story elements, cause/effect text structure, problem/solution text structure, and multiple opportunities to practice discussions with their classmates.

A large part of this novel study is discussion-based. I have included a slide on the slideshow where you will put your classroom expectations for discussions. In this product, students will learn the English vocabulary word for the 40 pre-primer sight words, 52 primer sight words presented, 41 first-grade sight words presented, 46 second-grade sight words, and 41 third-grade sight words presented.

This product can be used with students who are learning English. It can serve as an in class practice, review, or quiz.

Students will initially write each vocabulary word in their native language after learning the English word and being shown a picture. At the end of each sight words section (pre-primer, primer, 1st grade, 2nd grade, and 3rd grade sight words), students will have the opportunity to choose 11 sight words and make up a sentence using each one.

In the second section of each sight words section, there is a sight word review that requires students to write the English word and the word in the student's native language based on the picture and sentence provided for each sight word

In the third section of each sight words section, there is a sight words review that requires students to make up a sentence for each sight word (pre-primer, primer, 1st grade, 2nd grade, and 3rd grade sight words) learned in their native language.

In the fourth section of each sight words section, students will then be required to make up a sentence using each sight word in English.

Word Wall Activities

These activities can be used for any word wall. This set includes five activities.

1. Word Wall: Acrostic Poem: Students will design an acrostic poem using words from the word wall.
2. Word Wall: Spray the Word, Don't Say It: Students will define the word, draw a picture, and provide the synonym and antonym on aerosol cans.
3. Word Wall: Design Your Word Search: Students design a word search using the words on the word wall.
4. Word Wall: Roll an Activity: Students will complete an activity according to their roll number.
5. Word Wall: Clue Maker: Students will provide clues to the target word (word wall words).

Guided Reading is a research-based instruction process whereby the teacher works with small grouping of students being equal in a particular reading achievement level. The teacher provides for each reader's development of effective reading competencies. However different than in the earlier days of reading groups, small and temporary groups are flexible and dynamic. The observance and evaluation of the progress of readers are done by teachers on a systematic basis. Thus, grouping and regrouping students is based on the strengths of students and the intense changing needs throughout their reading development.

In the 1960s in New Zealand, Guided Reading was developed. It was enhanced over the years after it arrived in the United States thanks to educators like Gay Su Pinnell and Lesley Fountas. In 1996, Fountas & Pinnell published their enormously influential book, Guided Reading: Good First Teaching for All Children (Heinemann). This book changed how reading was taught, and it is still taught today to over a million teachers worldwide. The aim of Guided Reading lessons is to develop effective readers.

A set of 13 books is bundled together with all 13 worksheets of the Guided Reading series for grades KG-12. There are lesson plans and different activities for every grade, with the answers in the end section of the worksheet.

• 'Twas the Night Before Christmas: In the second task, students must order the plot events of Clement Clarke Moore's famous poem, 'Twas the Night Before Christmas, on Freytag's Pyramid. Once solved, corresponding letters reveal the second code.
• Christmas Fun Facts: In the third task, students will read 8 fun facts about Christmas and must identify the parts of speech of underlined words within the passages. When matched correctly, shaded boxes will reveal the third code.
• Xmas Around the World: In the fourth task, students must correct commonly confused words (like except and accept) in passages about how Christmas is celebrated around the world. Once complete, they must unscramble shaded boxes to reveal the fourth code.
• Encrypted Message: In the final task, students must solve an encrypted Christmas message using the codes and clues from the first four tasks. Then they must figure out the final line that completes the message. Once they write that on the final page, they can share the document with you (or sing it to you in the in-class version) and escape to Christmas vacation!
