This resource includes one Peer Evaluation Rubric in three variations - Same content. Editable versions are included, so you can modify in such a way that meets the needs of your students and instructional plans!

The Peer Evaluation Accountable Talk Discussion Rubric is meant for students to use and asses each other during Class Talk. Before beginning a discussion or debate, give each student a Peer Evaluation Rubric with another student’s name on it. (You can decide who will asses who, or you can just randomly write the names on Rubrics). Ask students to “secretly” observe and assess that student’s participation during the class discussion or debate. Students should not know who is assessing who so that evaluations of participation are fair. Throughout the discussion or debate, students will take meaningful notes of their classmates’ performances. At the end of the discussion or debate, give them 5 minutes to score the student whose name is on their Peer Evaluation Rubric. Finally, students can go up to the person they were observing and hand them the rubric. At the very end, the teacher collects the rubrics for review. This has worked so well for me! Students were always “on their toes." Students found it so exciting to be observed by classmates and also observe others.

Students' reflection of classroom talk helps them identify areas and skills that need both improvement and enrichment. These reflection sheets encourage students to reflect about their experiences during collaborative talk and develop an appreciation for particular skills involved. Making social inferences means understanding information that is inferred or not directly stated. It involves observing a situation, then using clues with background knowledge to figure out what has happened or what is happening. The ability to make social inferences is an essential social skill. The pictures are designed for middle and high school students with images of both younger and older people to help you better differentiate for your students.

Use these 30 pictures, in a variety of ways, to help students make social inferences and develop a social understanding of what they see. Students can use these pictures to develop an understanding of what people’s situations are, what their intentions are, how they are feeling, what they are thinking, and what is likely to happen next. The pictures are relevant and represent every day living.

DESCRIPTION

▶️ This is an comprehensive Picture Inference Lesson PACKET that includes at least eight activities where students can practice the skill of social inferencing using pictures that are relevant to this day in age. There are a total of 10 pictures that students will use to make inferences. Students have multiple opportunities to observe a social situation and combine picture clues and their background knowledge to figure out what is happening. Students can make inferences about how the people in the pictures are feeling, what they are doing, what they may be thinking, and what situation they may be in.

▶️ This lesson plan will help students learn how to read, interpret, and think about social situations. ALL pictures are age appropriate as you will not hesitate to use any picture during the learning process. After engaging in multiple inferencing activities, students will have the opportunity to reflect on their understanding of the lesson as well as their participation during the learning process. Failure to pick up on non-verbal signals, including body language and gestures, can make it hard for students or children to navigate all sorts of social situations. Body language and gestures convey messages, meaning, and important information beyond what is said. This resource is intended to help students "read" body language and navigate social situations successfully. It is also intended to provide students with opportunities to practice social skills by reading and responding to people’s body languages and gestures in an appropriate, positive manner.

SUGGESTIONS FOR USE:

How/When To Use Scenario Task Cards

• Role-Playing: Students can collaborate in pairs or groups to act out a variety of scenarios and demonstrate appropriate responses. Role-playing activities can also be used to show how "response" skills are used improperly and then asking the 'audience' to help reenact properly. This activity can ultimately improve confidence, communication, and assertiveness skills and further help students understand the difference between appropriate and inappropriate responses to people's body language and gestures.
• Play Writing Exercise: Students can work in groups to create skits or scenes related to body language then perform the skit for the class.
• Writing Response: Students can be given a scenario to read and then write their responses. Students can switch papers with a partner who then reads their responses and determines whether they agree/disagree with their responses/approaches to these real-life scenarios.
• Discussion: Students can discuss the Body Language / Non-verbal Communication Scenario Task Cards in groups or whole class. They can discuss things like “What would you do?”, “Why would you do that?”, and “What are some other options you could consider?”

Making Inferences is a challenging skill to master, especially for lower-level students. This resource includes two sets of Picture Inference Task Cards (80 cards in total) that are differentiated to meet the needs of both lower-level and higher-level students. The pictures in these task cards are very relevant as students "see" these everyday images almost anywhere they go!

DESCRIPTION

▶️ The first set of 40 cards, which are the color RED, have pictures that students can use to make inferences. These RED Picture Inference Task Cards include guiding questions to help lower level students make inferences.

▶️ The second set of 40 cards, which are the color GREEN, have the SAME pictures that students can use to make inferences, but without the guiding questions. Instead, this set of Picture Inference Task Cards read: “What can you infer from this picture?” and “Why do you think that?” These questions require high-level students to think for themselves as they pay close attention to picture details.

▶️ Finally, this resource includes a Picture Inference Worksheet that students can use to record their inferences and evidence. Students can record inferences and evidence for two pictures.

▶️ This is engaging practice for your especially ELL and Special Ed students and is perfect for mini-lessons, whole class instruction, cooperative learning, intervention groups, literacy centers, and small group instruction.

Suggestions on how you can use the Picture Inference Task Cards:

1. Small Group Instruction - You can have students engage in small group instruction where you provide additional support on the skill of inferencing. These Picture Inference Task Cards will support that type of instruction. You can have all students in small groups practice with the same Picture Inference Task Card number or you can distribute 1-2 task cards to each student to practice making inferences and citing evidence before reviewing.

2. Mini Lesson - You can load these Picture Inference Task Cards on the Smartboard and use them to demonstrate how to make an inference, while paying closing attention to details. They can also be used to discuss the importance of details and how they are used to encourage inferential thinking. You can even use these task cards to discuss the difference between relevant picture details and irrelevant details. Finally, you can use these inference task cards during the guided practice portion of your lesson.

3. Exit Slips - You can use these Picture Inference Task Cards as Exit Slips by distributing 1-2 task cards to each student to complete and hand in to you before they leave.

4. Partner Study - You can have students pair up and “test/question each other.” Partners not only ask each other to make valid inferences and support it with relevant picture details, but to be open to a variety of valid inferences that can be made from the same picture.
