Level Ups are a fun way for your students to practice or review defining functions and comparing functions. Aligned to the common core standards, this Level Ups activity includes 5 differentiated tasks that increase in rigor. The task cards begin with pre-requisite skills involving identifying the slope and y-intercept of linear functions in different representations, then "level up" all the way to creating and comparing functions that are both linear and non-linear.

Students start at level zero and work their way up to level 4, giving them accurate feedback on what they have mastered, and what they still need to work on. This lesson works as a great way to review what is and is not a function, or as preparation for an upcoming assessment.

This activity includes:

-Suggested activity instructions (based on how I run this in my classroom).

-Five levels with 6 - 11 questions each.

-Complete answer keys for each level.

The Concrete, Pictorial, Abstract Approach is an effective teaching approach that helps to develop a deep and sustainable understanding of mathematics in students.

When integrated into your classroom it helps to build on your students existing understanding and making complex mathematical concepts accessible to all.

Concrete: refers to the 'doing' stage. Where students manipulate concrete materials to solve problems. This is the first stage of the approach or framework.

Pictorial: refers to the 'seeing' stage. Where students create visual presentations of the concrete objects that they have just used to model the problem. This allows students to make connections between the objects they have just used and the abstract pictures they have drawn.

Abstract: refers to the 'symbolic' stage. Where students use numbers and symbols to model a problem. This is the final stage to mastering a concept. Students will not move onto this stage if they do not have a solid understanding of the concrete and pictorial representations.

It is also important to go back and forth, continually practicing each stage to reinforce mathematical concepts.

What is a Surd? This is a surprisingly slippery topic. As a teacher or tutor, we might have an understanding of what one is, but there are a lot of loopholes, traps and exceptions. This poster helps! We have found in our research that explanations of Surds often omit certain pieces of important information in order to generate a simpler understanding, only for the student to be told that there are some exceptions to the rules. "The Answers Are..." is a great Non-Curricular Thinking Task your math students can all access, no matter their skill level. Each task card gives a number bank and 5 target answers your students must create. Using each number in the bank only one time each, students work in teams of three to create all 5 expressions by adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing. It's more challenging than you might think!

If you are implementing Building Thinking Classrooms this year, "The Answers Are..." is a great thinking task to do with your students at your Vertical Whiteboard stations during the first week of school. Once they solve one of the puzzles, they will keep coming back for more.
