Exploring Careers: Government & Public Administration | Distance Learning

This career unit gives students an introduction to the government and public administration career cluster and what a career in this field would be like. This is perfect for a career, technology, CTE or business class.
The included PowerPoint presentation can be used by the teacher for whole class instruction, or provided to the students electronically (or as a printout) for them to review individually. Students use close reading skills with a short informational passage to learn about the career field and answer questions to use critical thinking skills and demonstrate their understanding. Two different puzzles are included to learn different jobs in the career and to reinforce vocabulary skills. A technology based project (using MS Word or MS Publisher) to research information about a related topic is included to allow students to use critical thinking and creativity to further explore the career field. Additionally, a group current event project that can be completed without student computer access (by the teacher printing out the articles from the linked information) or providing access to a computer for each group to research is provided to allow students to utilize critical thinking skills and teamwork. Finally, a short reflection questionnaire gives students the opportunity to reflect and analyze their learning as they determine if this career field is of interest to them.
The project was created for grades 7-8 but could easily be used with high school students. The teacher can choose to use some or all of the provided lesson options included in this resource.
This lesson is great for distance learning/remote learning. You can upload it to your school's learning management system (Google Classroom, Edmodo, Canvas, etc.) or share with students via Google Drive.

A complete answer key is provided for the WebQuests for easy grading, along with resources for both teachers and students. The student questions are included in both a print version and a digital (editable) version to make it easy for students to complete the lesson digitally or on paper. Also included with this lesson is an editable acrostic puzzle that can be printed for students or completed on the computer (file provided in MS Word which can be opened in Google Docs if you prefer). It includes two versions of the puzzle for differentiation and an answer key, which is perfect for early finishers or as a part of the lesson. As a bonus, with this bundle an additional word search puzzle is included that covers all three topics (includes an answer key).
This lesson is intended to be an introduction to the topics and was designed for middle school (grades 6-8) but could be used in high school as well. This lesson could be used in a history or technology class and is also a great lesson to leave for a substitute teacher!
This lesson is great for distance learning/remote learning. You can upload it to your school's learning management system (Google Classroom, Edmodo, Canvas, etc.) or share with students via Google Drive.

7 Wonders of the World - Research ~ Engineering Design ~ Construction Project

In this lesson, students learn more about both the classic Seven Wonders of the World and the “new” Seven Wonders project as they research the history, design and engineering of the wonders. The lesson starts with a whole class Microsoft PowerPoint presentation (editable) to view the Wonders and start discussion. Next, students choose one of the classic and one of the “new” Wonders to research further and create a presentation with that information (using Microsoft PowerPoint or Google Slides). Optionally, these may be presented to the class. In the next part of the assignment, they design an “Eighth Wonder” of their own (to scale) based on what they learned, using Sketchup (a free CAD program that can be downloaded at: https://www.sketchup.com/ or used as an online tool). After completing the drawing, students build a model of their Wonder to scale using chipboard, cardboard or other materials. The building activity can be done as a team/small group activity if you prefer. Finally, students answer questions to reflect on their learning for this unit. This lesson was designed for middle school (grades 6-8) but could be used in upper elementary grades or high school as well. There are may political, economic, and social factors that reshape our world and our maps. Students will participate in the introductory PowerPoint presentation and will visit historical events that have shaped our world and today's maps. This is a great lesson to incorporate into your maps unit. It goes beyond the basics and broadens the students' scope of understanding.

OBJECTIVE:
- The learner will understand factors which shaped our maps, such as colonization, decolonization, war, and regions claiming and gaining independence, etc.
- The learner will explore historical events that shaped today’s map.
- The learner will identify social, historical, and economic factors that reshape maps.
MATERIALS:
- Make multiple copies of each “Events that Shaped Our World” activity sheets.
- Access to the Internet for research purposes.
- Powerpoint Identifying social, historical and economic factors that shaped our maps
This & That Introductory Game - Maps or atlases for student to use a references. If you don’t have these, find a map with political boundaries for each country and state of United States or each team.
- Colored pencils for student can draw the before and after maps on their activity sheet.
- Numbers to display on the wall for the Gallery Walk.
- Pad of sticky notes for each group.

The Impact of Inventions on Society | Distance Learning

This project based learning unit is perfect for middle school (6-8) classes that focus on careers, technology, history or CTE.
Unit Lesson Plans include:

3. Exploring Inventions Project (PowerPoint)

Students create a timeline to show a century of inventions of their choice and make real-world connections in how those inventions influenced our history and society. Next, they choose five different inventions in different categories to explore in depth and create a PowerPoint. Finally, students research an inventor of interest and create a web page about them and their inventions, further connecting their learning to their own world and giving it an authentic audience.
My 7th graders loved sharing their research with each other and challenged each other to "think outside the box" as they gained a better understanding of technology and history. I know your students will enjoy this too!
This lesson is great for distance learning/remote learning. You can upload it to your school's learning management system (Google Classroom, Edmodo, Canvas, etc.) or share with students via Google Drive.

History of Computers - Group Research & Presentation Project

In this lesson, students learn more about the history of the computer. The lesson starts with a Microsoft PowerPoint whole class presentation that gives an overview of computer history from the 1950’s through current times. Next, students work in small groups to research history information from an assigned decade and then to create a presentation using Microsoft PowerPoint (or Google Slides) to share with the class. Students take notes during the presentations and then culminate their learning with a short quiz over the material. A study sheet is provided to cover the material from each decade that will be tested to give students an opportunity to review the information (or to assist in the case of absences or presentations that are incomplete). This lesson was designed for middle school (grades 6-8) but could be used in upper elementary grades or high school as well.
