"The Answers Are..." is a great Non-Curricular Thinking Task your secondary math students can all access, no matter their skill level. Each task card gives a number bank with 10 integers and 5 target answers your students must create. Using each number in the bank only one time each, students work in random teams of three to create all 5 expressions by adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing. It's more challenging than you might think!

If you are implementing Building Thinking Classrooms this year, "The Answers Are..." is a great thinking task to do with your students at your Vertical Whiteboard stations during the first week of school. Once they solve one of the puzzles, they will keep coming back for more.

The Sandwich Spot Lunch Menu includes drinks, sandwiches, sides, and dessert that customers may purchase as posed in the addition and subtraction questions presented in the product. Students can then choose which products they would purchase and will be required to add and subtract chosen menu items. Algebraic substitution is not very exciting at best. Finding a formula that always generates prime numbers will make you world famous. This task card combines the two math skills into an exciting discovery exercise. Students get to explore the effectiveness of certain formulas in generating primes (while they are doing lots of substitution). Eventually they will see that this exercise is futile, but will hopefully have fun on the journey.

My students struggle when we start factoring with a=1 or a>1 to find the numbers that would fit the requirements. This guides students in this process. Use this for pre-teaching, independent practice, or for math intervention.
