This 4-page pre-reading handout provides students with important background information for understanding William Shakespeare's Julius Caesar. This resource includes a two-page handout on the history of the Roman Republic. The resource also included is a comprehension check and answer key so that teachers can assess whether students have understood important details from the handout.

Learning about the history of the Roman Republic will provide students with the contextual information necessary for understanding certain lines in Shakespeare's Julius Caesar. This product teaches students how to write a letter to a service member who is currently deployed overseas. It describes the importance of writing to our military and gives suggestions for what to say. I use this as an extra credit assignment and hold my students to high standards about the content of their letters. It is incredibly important that genuine thought and effort go into the letters as they are going to real people currently fighting for our country.

As students read their independent reading/ reading workshop book over the course of the week, they will select 5 words or phrases that the author used that stood out to them, or had a particularly strong impact. They will put the 5 words, definitions, and an analysis of how the author used them onto one piece of blank paper. The end result will be one page of visually appealing information. I used this for independent reading, but you could use it for a specific novel or even literature circles. The file contains directions for you to copy or post, Success Criteria, and a scoring rubric.

This resource should accompany Kwame Alexander's novel The Door of No Return. There are 8 journal prompts total. One should be completed before starting the story, and one after finishing the story. Cover pages are included. This resource contains 18 PDF pages. 9 sheets are in color, and 9 are black/white.

The questions in this journal are related to the story. They ask students to predict, characterize, think about text structure and author's choice, and compare this story to others about slavery. There are many lines for students to use while journaling to organize their writing.

This is an assignment that asks students to identify 6 examples of adversity that the Wiley College Debate team had to overcome on the left, and explain how they did so using evidence from the movie on the right. Lastly, they are asked to make 2 connections to works of literature they've recently read.

I show this movie after reading a number of pieces from the 8th grade Pearson text about African Americans facing diversity, studying relevant court cases, and reading the novel "Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry", but you could really have the students connect the movie back to whatever texts you're reading at the time that are relevant.

This resource should be used with Edgar Allan Poe's short story The Tell-Tale Heart. With this activity, students will read the M'Naghten rule of 1843 and decide whether or not they believe the main character of The Tell-Tale Heart would be found legally sane or insane. This resource includes space for students to collect textual evidence to support their answer, space for students to write other open-ended questions for discussion, and a discussion grading rubric.

I used this activity with my 8th grade students, and they absolutely loved it. They found great evidence to back up their explanations, and gained a deeper understanding of the short story and the M'Naghten rule. We used this resource in a socratic seminar formatted discussion, and they had enough to say about the main character and the M'Naghten rule that the majority of our 55 minute class period was covered.

This resource should accompany Kwame Alexander's book The Door of No Return. This writing project asks students to conduct a small amount of research about the real Door of No Return. They will consider why the author may have chosen this title for his book, and they will think about how their reading experience may have been different if they had known about the door before reading.

This resource includes the writing prompt, a space for collecting information regarding the research questions, an essay outline, and a grading rubric. All sheets come in color and black/white for easy printing.

The excerpt from "Once Upon a Time When We Were Colored" by Clifton L. Taulbert appears in my school's 8th grade red McDougal Littell textbook. This is an analysis of my FAVORITE quote from Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury, which appears on page 79 of my version of the text (the one with the red cover and book of matches). There are 4 questions that can be used as a Do Now/Bellringer, Exit Ticket, partner activity, or even as a homework assignment. Answers are included!

It’s not books you need, it’s some of the things that once were in books. The same things could be in the ‘parlor families’ today. The same infinite detail and awareness could be projected through the radios and televisors, but are not. No, no, it’s not books at all you’re looking for! Take it where you can find it, in old phonograph records, old motion pictures, and in old friends; look for it in nature and look for it in yourself. Books were only one type of receptacle where we stored a lot of things we were afraid we might forget. There is nothing magical in them, at all. The magic is only in what books say, how they stitched the patches of the universe together into one garment for us” (Bradbury 79).
