What is a Surd? This is a surprisingly slippery topic. As a teacher or tutor, we might have an understanding of what one is, but there are a lot of loopholes, traps and exceptions. This poster helps! We have found in our research that explanations of Surds often omit certain pieces of important information in order to generate a simpler understanding, only for the student to be told that there are some exceptions to the rules. This poster therefore aims to set a firm grounding on which to build an understanding of surds without having to navigate through the maze of exceptions and loopholes. The Concrete, Pictorial, Abstract Approach is an effective teaching approach that helps to develop a deep and sustainable understanding of mathematics in students.

When integrated into your classroom it helps to build on your students existing understanding and making complex mathematical concepts accessible to all.

Concrete: refers to the 'doing' stage. Where students manipulate concrete materials to solve problems. This is the first stage of the approach or framework.

Pictorial: refers to the 'seeing' stage. Where students create visual presentations of the concrete objects that they have just used to model the problem. This allows students to make connections between the objects they have just used and the abstract pictures they have drawn.

Abstract: refers to the 'symbolic' stage. Where students use numbers and symbols to model a problem. This is the final stage to mastering a concept. Students will not move onto this stage if they do not have a solid understanding of the concrete and pictorial representations.

It is also important to go back and forth, continually practicing each stage to reinforce mathematical concepts.

This poster is intended to lay the groundwork for a very basic understanding of how Decimals work, without relying on a comparison to Fractions or Percentages at the very first hurdle. We think that a student should understand the principles of decimals in relation to numbers which are a power of 10, before comparing and contrasting them with Fractions and Percentages. This way, an understanding of fraction conversion can become even stronger later down the line. Are you in need of cute and functional nameplates/nametags for your students? Look no further! This resource is perfect for you! These nametags measure approximately 4.27 inches high and 10.91 inches width wise (numbers will vary based on how you cut them out). These are a bit bigger so they won't fit in the holders from target but they are easy to laminate. Once you edit - print on your preferred paper (cardstock is my preference - I like Astrobrights), laminate and cut! Easy to cut - just cut across in the middle!

Students will be able to use these right away to help with their multiplication facts, place value and gives them an idea of what the cursive letters look like! There are 3 options! For the primary kiddos - numbers 1 -30 on the top and the primary alphabet on the bottom! I am using them in my fourth grade class and the students are already raving about how helpful they are - no more straining to see the posters!

I attach mine with velcro so that students can easily take them with them if they work in a different area of the room.

You will need a font KA Jackfruit for it to look just like mine. I included the link to purchase the font in the file. Zip files open to an editable powerpoint!
