This resource features a bundle of our four famous author escape rooms for Edgar Allan Poe, Jane Austen, Ray Bradbury, and William Shakespeare. They offer the perfect way to introduce, re-introduce, or review each author with your students in an engaging and meaningful way.

Edgar Allan Poe ESCAPE ROOM:

The ghost of Edgar Allan Poe has risen from the grave to have his revenge on your students who he feels, spend too much time on their smartphones and not enough time studying him. He has trapped them in the room until they can show that they do in fact "know Poe!"

• Poe FAQs: In the first task, students must complete a crossword puzzle with questions about Poe. Once complete, they must unscramble circled boxes to reveal the first code.
• Death Mystery: In the second task, students must find all 21 theories of how Poe died in a word search. Remaining letters will form the second code.
• Extra! Extra! Read All About it!: In the third task, students must match fictional newspaper headlines with the short story by Poe that they represent. This task is in the form of a mat puzzle and the code is revealed when students have matched all short stories correctly.
• Annabel Lee: In the fourth task, students must perform a close reading of one of Poe's most famous poems, Annabel Lee. The letters of the multiple choice questions about the poem will form the fourth code.
• Jig Saw Quote: In the fifth task, students must assemble a jig saw puzzle with a quote from one of Poe's stories.

Jane Austen Escape Room:

The ghost of Jane Austen has risen from the grave with a dire warning. She is upset because she believes that people have become too concerned with money and looks and have forgotten the true meaning of love. She will not allow anyone to exit the room until everyone learns more about her, her novels, and the lessons she desires to instill upon us all.

• Austen FAQs: In the first task, students must complete a crossword puzzle with questions about Jane Austen's life. Once complete, they must unscramble circled boxes to reveal the first code.

In this full-length lesson plan, students will closely examine the final lines of Shakespearean characters before their deaths (if you know Shakespeare, there are quite a few!). I invented the take on this game several years ago and it has become one of my students' and my favorite days of the whole school year. To be festive, I love to give this assignment on the anniversary of Shakespeare's actual death, April 23, but with the subject at hand, it also works well as a Halloween lesson plan.
