9th Grade Social Studies & History Projects (by date, oldest first)

Lesson Overview

In this lesson, students learn interesting facts about the history of Hip Hop and Rap music as they complete several projects including a WebQuest (Internet Scavenger Hunt) to answer questions about the topic. A complete answer key is provided for the WebQuest for easy grading, along with resources for both teachers and students. The student questions are included in both a print version and a digital (editable) version to make it easy for students to complete the lesson digitally or on paper. Also included with this lesson is a word search puzzle that includes an answer key, perfect for early finishers or as a part of the lesson. Finally, students research their choice of a Rap musician and create a presentation about their contributions to the field of Hip Hop & Rap using their choice of Microsoft PowerPoint or Google Slides.

This lesson is intended to be an introduction to the topic and was designed for middle school (grades 6-8) but could be used in high school as well. This lesson could be used in a music, history or technology class and is also a great lesson to leave for a substitute teacher!

In this lesson, students learn more about both the classic Seven Wonders of the World and the “new” Seven Wonders project as they research the history, design and engineering of the wonders. The lesson starts with a whole class Microsoft PowerPoint presentation (editable) to view the Wonders and start discussion. Next, students choose one of the classic and one of the “new” Wonders to research further and create a presentation with that information (using Microsoft PowerPoint or Google Slides). Optionally, these may be presented to the class. In the next part of the assignment, they design an “Eighth Wonder” of their own (to scale) based on what they learned, using Sketchup (a free CAD program that can be downloaded at: https://www.sketchup.com/ or used as an online tool). After completing the drawing, students build a model of their Wonder to scale using chipboard, cardboard or other materials. The building activity can be done as a team/small group activity if you prefer. Finally, students answer questions to reflect on their learning for this unit. This lesson was designed for middle school (grades 6-8) but could be used in upper elementary grades or high school as well. In this lesson, students learn more about famous structures and landmarks in Ukraine and the individuals who created them. Students choose the landmarks they will research and then create a presentation using Google Earth to showcase their information along with pictures, videos and maps. Included with the lesson are student expectations, grading rubric and a tutorial for Google Earth (a free, Web 2.0 tool that does not require download). For classrooms with limited technology, this lesson can be completed with students working in pairs or small groups. The completed presentations can be shared with the rest of the class if the teacher chooses.

This is a great activity for a social studies or history class, or for a technology class. This lesson was designed for middle school (grades 6-8) but could be used in upper elementary grades or high school as well.

The project is divided into fourteen sections, including the front pages. Sections include Language/Population, Habitat/Geography, Family Structure, Government, and several others. Each section has a list of criteria and questions that must be answered to complete the section.

I would expect a single student to take about ten weeks, with a weekly goal (perhaps a little faster) of completing one section.

There is a score for each section and teacher info on ways to make it work.

The project contains a cover sheet, a teacher's page, two student pages and a sheet to help students select an appropriate civilization.

There is also a list of civilizations that have an abundance of information available on line.

Take your students into today's world and its current environmental, human, and cultural situations.

Students will learn about current events in our world while exploring the 5 geographical themes — location, place, movement, human-environment interaction, and region. The five geography themes enable you to discuss and explain people, places, and environments of the past and present. This is a higher-level thinking skill assignment for grades 6-12 and can be modified by the instructor for various learning levels. Incorporates students' creative side and music, and provides hands-on learning to reach all different types of learners. All instructions and resources are included.

It includes two projects that are fast and fun. The first one is a current events mural. It includes the rubric, examples, and a guide. The second one is an Instagram mockup post. This, like the mural project, tends to be one of the students' favorite activities because it resonates with them. As a bonus, it includes an activity that helps generate a podcast outline. These activities can be completed quickly and are foolproof. They can be done at Spanish levels 2 through AP Spanish.

You may hear about natural disasters often, but some of the deadliest disasters in world history have been environmental disasters caused by human activity. This lesson involves having your students investigate environmental disasters that have taken place on our planet. Their initial focus will be to examine the Chernobyl disaster in the Soviet Union. After closely exploring the historical background to this accident, students will then choose and research a different environment disaster, and create a Google Slide presentation to demonstrate their findings.
