Have you tried Integrated Listening and Speaking activities with your Spanish students? Use these IPA activities with the theme of accidents and injuries to get students listening and responding- just like in tests like AAPPL for the Seal of Biliteracy! Integrated Performance Assessments mimic real-world interactions, and these activities are great practice for communication!

These no-prep activities include everything you need to assign and go! Each activity has 5 audio links. Students listen to the audio and record a logical response. They will hear common expressions used on the AAPPL Test like “Hazme preguntas, cuéntame and dame detalles”.

The teacher script allows you to correct with ease or even record your own voice if you choose. There are lots of notes and ideas for teachers so you know just how to use this activity! Finally, students can self-assess with the included rubric. The 2 activities are created with different levels of complexity, so you can differentiate for different levels amongst your students, or use them at different points in your unit!

This AP Spanish® oral presentation project about identity is one of my very favorites! Your AP Spanish® students will love exploring their own identity and also learning about their teacher's and their classmates’ identities. Everyone will enjoy this short project! And teachers, you will love this project for 2 reasons; you will get to know your students in a new way and you can combine speaking, listening and writing in one project!

Using the metaphor of an iceberg, students will tell their class about the things that are obvious to all about their identity, and also share some things that hide below the surface.

As students present, the others take notes on what they reveal. As a follow up assignment, students (and teacher too!) write short letters to each other to acknowledge the courage it takes to speak in public, especially about the parts of yourself that may not be visible to the world. Receiving letters from their classmates and teacher is often something that students will remember forever and treasure. It's a great bonding experience for the class!

The student instructions and rubric are included, as well as some helpful tips about how teachers can make these presentations work either in person or with students online.

How can I use this product?

This activity goes great with Unit 2: The Influence of Language and Culture on Identity
I assign this as an interim oral assessment
Students have several days to organize their thoughts for the presentation
Students may print the iceberg image and use it to make bulleted notes
There are many ways to have students present their Icebergs, depending on the size of your class, how much class time you would like to use, and if you students are in person, hybrid or online. All of the options are explained in the included teacher notes!
During the presentations, all the listeners take notes on what they hear
After the presentations, all listeners will write short letters to their classmates
Collect students' icebergs and hang them up in your classroom!

Do your Spanish students need some help with interpersonal speaking? Are they struggling to have conversations in Spanish? Let’s give them some guided support with these partner conversations about Jobs & Employment! Both students will have the opportunity to ask and answer questions as part of a conversation, but with a lot of scaffolding to build confidence. Guided conversations provide general guidance about how to keep the conversation going without telling students exactly what to say.

There are 4 guided conversations, so both students will have a chance to ask and answer questions in a conversational way. Two versions are for Intermediate Low students, but are pre-differentiated. 2 of the conversations are based mainly in the present tense, and the other 2 feature future and past tenses.

Students will work in partners to participate in a guided conversation
Students will trade roles so both can practice asking questions and answering questions

Is reading comprehension getting boring in your Spanish class? Turn it into a game! This reading about Spring Festivals in Spain goes from dull to exciting as students work together and move around the room to solve a mystery! This is a simple “print and go” with no work for the teacher!

Alberto’s favorite Aunt has not come back from her vacation to Spain! He and his family are worried, and they decide to go to Spain to find her. To figure out where she is, students have to read all 10 parts of the story to get the full picture of where she has been and where she could be now. While they read the parts, they are also looking for “code words”. Students record the code words on a special answer sheet that will eventually lead them to solving the mystery of where Tia Ana is now. It’s so much fun!

Festivals discussed:

-La Feria de Abril (Sevilla)

-Las Fallas (Valencia)

-Carnaval (Cádiz)

After, you can decide which of the 4 follow-up activities you want to do with your students. There are 4; a tell me in your own words summary, a True or False Activity to check for basic comprehension, a graphic organizer for students to organize notes about the 3 festivals discussed, and a writing follow up where students use their reading comprehension and critical thinking to invent an explanation for why Tía Ana didn’t return home. Answer key to the True/False is also included. Best of all? If there’s something you’d like to change for your students, you are free to edit!

What to turn your Spanish reading comprehension or grammar review into a game? Using CI to give your students contextualized, comprehensible input? These reading passages will motivate, engage and deliver all the CI your students need!

The 1st reading is about how to live a healthy lifestyle. It’s perfect for themes about health, diet and exercise. Working in groups helps reduce anxiety about answering questions while at the same time allows students to share their reading strategies with others. The teacher has comprehension questions about the reading (with answers included) so that each set of students has a chance to answer multiple questions.

Reading 2 is about a teen who convinces her parents to let her have a pet. Reading 3 is a conversation between 2 teens about an upcoming concert. These themes are taken from the published list of topics from ACTFL that students encounter on the AAPPL Test.

This reading is meant for Intermediate Low students. Comprehension questions are written in Spanish and answers are included. Any part of this resource can be customized for your students if needed! Also included are teacher notes and ideas for how to turn the reading passages into a game!

Do your Spanish students need some help with interpersonal speaking? Are they struggling to have conversations in Spanish? Let’s give them some guided support with these partner conversations about Hobbies & Free Time! Both students will have the opportunity to ask and answer questions as part of a conversation, but with a lot of scaffolding to build confidence. Guided conversations provide general guidance about how to keep the conversation going without telling students exactly what to say.

There are 4 guided conversations, so both students will have a chance to ask and answer questions in a conversational way. Two versions are for Novice High students and 2 versions are for Intermediate students.

These conversations focus on Hobbie & Free Time mainly in the present time frame.

Looking for ways to make writing fun for your Spanish students? If you need differentiated and engaging activities to help students level up their presentational writing and reading comprehension, this is the resource for you! Students will write together in groups, help each other by doing a peer edit, and later read and answer questions about the characters they have created.

Step 1: Students pretend they are the teacher, and need to leave detailed notes about the students in their class for a substitute. In groups, students follow the specific instructions to describe each student. Each group will get 4 writing sheets which contain a picture of a student and space to write. There are 20 different students in all. The instructions ask student to describe each person. What are they like? What do they like to do? What are their future plans? What’s important to them? Do you have fast finishers? No problem- there’s an extension activity for them! They can help you create questions about what they wrote that will be used in step 3!

Step 2: After taking a quick glance at their work, set students up in pairs. I usually do this the next day. They will trade papers and use the peer edit instruction sheet to suggest ways to improve their writing.

Step 3: Another day, hang the descriptions around the room. Create simple questions for students to answer while they read around the room! *This works great as a quick review for a quiz! Students love it because they are allowed to be out of their seats!

Differentiation:

-This resource comes with differentiated instructions appropriate for Year 3, or Intermediate Low.

-Students can use new vocabulary along with things they already know how to say to create connected sentences, and attempt to use more than one time frame.

-To level this down, change the instructions to include topics students know how to talk about.

-To level this up, change the instructions to ask for more details and require other times frames.

Students in Spanish 1 through Spanish 4. It’s easily modified for any level!

How can I use this product?

Students will work collaboratively in part one.
Next they work in pairs
Finally, they will read and answer questions. This can be done alone, in pairs or in small groups!

Are you and your students getting bored with grammar? The present subjunctive can get a little repetitive and dry, until you play this game! Get every student involved and excited to speak Spanish with a Speed Counseling Game! This real-world activity is a great way to practice interpersonal speaking.

Playing on the idea of Speed Dating, students will play the role of the advisor (teacher, friend, doctor, school counselor) and the person with a problem. The advisor will have a short amount of time to give advice about the problem before the timer goes off, and they have a variety of problems to give advice about. Then they can switch roles.

The game is fast-paced and involves everyone in the class to be actively involved! Best of all, it’s low prep: Copy, cut, and go!!

How can I use this product?

Set kids up in pairs
Print problem cards and note taking sheets. Make copies for your classes.

There are very clear, specific instructions for each part, and they are written in English to avoid any misunderstandings over the summer. How can I use this product?

I recommend asking your colleagues to distribute this assignment to incoming AP Spanish students at least a week before the end of the school year to give students time to read it over, think about it and ask questions.
Be sure students understand what is expected and when their summer work is due. I always say that it's due on the first day of school, but often I will allow students to peer edit or ask last minute questions on the first or second day of school.
By the 3rd day of a new school year, I put students into groups of about 4. I sit with a group and grade their oral presentations as they say them. The other groups are working on different assignments. I space out how many groups per day I listen to based on 1) what kind of schedule we have (we have had several in the past few years due to Covid and other factors!) and 2) spending at least some time each day with my whole class so I can establish routines and get to know them.
I ask students to report to their small groups because it eases anxiety for students who don't know me or their classmates well, and who are worried about their ability to speak in Spanish and about their first grade for AP Spanish.
Teachers can choose to grade the speaking and writing for a formal grade or just use their performance as a baseline for the year.

Are your Spanish students preparing to take a test for the Seal of Biliteracy? Here are 15 interpersonal listening/speaking prompts designed to help them succeed on the AAPPL Test. Build speaking proficiency by allowing students to listen to the recorded prompts and record their own responses.

This activity is designed to mimic the AAPPL test in that there are multiple prompts about lots of subjects. The prompts will ask students to respond with their own information, or to ask questions. The prompts become more complex as they go, and move between present and past tenses primarily.
