9th Grade Geography Cultural Activities (by date, oldest first)

This is a great way to get students moving, collaborating and learning about Latin America Geography! This lesson/activity encourage students to develop higher-level thinking skills. The more they practice, the better their thinking strategies will become.

Students will complete a K-W-L Chart prior to the lesson while watching a suggested Intro video to peak their interest.

Students will work in teams and will rotate around (like a carousel) from one picture to another, spending 1-2 minutes at each and brainstorming the answers to the questions on each. Students will write their ideas on the chart paper at each station. Allow students add additional knowledge/terms to the chart if they wish. This will act as an extension of their learning.

Students will develop a one sentence summary of the main ideas and present it to the class. Students will be given blank maps to fill in the ideas presented as a listening/comprehension activity.

Following World War I, Germany was in economic, political, and physical ruins. In 1933, Adolf Hitler became Chancellor and began his quiet quest against anyone who was not Arian. In 1931, Germany was given the option of hosting the 1936 Olympics. Hilter, under his Nazi German totalitarian dictatorship government system, wasn't sure it was a good idea until he was convinced that they could build the largest stadium to be seen at the Olympics and make Germany look as if it was not in ruin. He agreed! The 1936 Olympics were different from the Olympics in the past. It incorporated theatre, high-tech equipment for the games, and wonderful production with a lot of rituals that would continue into the Olympic games after Hitler's Olympics.

Hitler kept the secret of his war against the Jews throughout the two weeks of the 1936 Olympics using propaganda to show the world how well Germany was doing; the world, however, had no idea whatwas in store for Germany and the Jews who lived within its borders.

OBJECTIVES:

Need a creative way for your students to demonstrate their learned knowledge?

Have your students create a "Cultural Cube", using G.R.A.P.E.S. The student will be assigned or chose a country to study based on our current studies and will create illustrations for each theme related to their country. To support their findings, they will complete the Think, Pair, & Share handout to use when presenting their cube.

OBJECTIVE:

The Learner will explore the cultural, political, physical, and environmental aspects of a country throughG.R.A.P.E.S

o The Leaner will make connections between relationships and places.

o The Learner will demonstrate his/her understanding of G.R.A.P.E.S through illustration and written explanation.

o The Learner will explain his/her knowledge of the country and themes by presenting his/her final product.

MATERIALS:

o Copies of the Culture Cube preferably on cardstock for sturdiness, if possible. (1 Per Student)

o Copies of the Culture Cube: Think, Pair & Share (1 Per Student)

o Rulers, scissors, glue, colored pencils, crayons, markers, rulers

o Tools for research: Internet, books on countries, magazines, textbooks, etc.
