Hidden Faces In Geography, A Study of Black Geographers, Black History Month

By Geography & Math Made Easy

A Celebration of Black Geographers & Their Accomplishments!

Geography seeks to study our planet and tell the stories of the people who inhabit it. But what stories are told? And who is chosen to tell them? Throughout history, often Black geographers were not given credit for their explorations and discoveries. This is a great lesson for geography for Black History Month.

1492: Among the crew on the Santa Maria during Christopher Columbus's voyage to the Americas is Pedro Alonzo Nino, a black man. Africans also accompany Ponce de Leon, Hernando Cortes, Francisco Pizarro, Hernando de Soto, and Francisco Vasquez de Coronado in the early 16th century and it is said they helped with the discoveries.

This lesson brings to light and gives credit to 14 Blacks who were geographical explorers throughout history. Students also have the option to choose to research a past or present geographer outside of those specific to this lesson, which gives them student autonomy and ownership of their learning..

The learner will:

  • Gain a greater understanding of Black geographers / explores contributions and role in history.
  • Analyze how Black explorers impacted the occupations in geography.
  • Gain an understanding of how unnoticed black geographers aided in creating a passageway for following Black generations to appreciate geography.
  • Understanding how the Black populations have impacted and continue to impact geography.

This lesson includes:

  • Suggested videos for an introduction (Not required)
  • Detailed-teacher instructions including preparation, materials needed, procedures, and game instructions.
  • Group or Individual Activity
  • Research guide
  • Exit cards

NEW! Africa Geography — Africa Rift Valley: Breakin Up Is Hard (MUSIC INCLUDED)

By Geography & Math Made Easy

A zip file reader is needed to open the file.

This is a fun and musical way to discuss a tough subject on plate boundaries and how they affect the African Rift Valley along a divergent plate boundary where the Somali Plate and African Plate are drifting apart. In millions of years, this could cause not only East Africa to become a new small continent, but would create a new ocean.

This lesson incorporates music as a learning tool. Students will enjoy the new rendition of the song Breaking Up is Hard to Do. It is a love song from West Africa to the East African Rift Valley. An original teacher-created MP3 of the song is included in this lesson.

OBJECTIVES:

  1. The learner will listen to and analyze the song.
  2. The learner will understand how physical processes shape patterns in the physical environment specific to tectonic plated forces.
  3. The learner will describe different landforms such as trenches and lakes near Africa’s Great Rift Valley and the physical processes that cause their development.
  4. The student will explore how people, places, and environments changed over time and the effects of these changes.
  5. The student will demonstrate their understanding of the causes and effects of environmental changes on people and the economy.

LESSON INCLUDES:

  • Detailed teacher instructions
  • Suggesting videos (Not Mandatory for Lesson)
  • Lyrics to song + song analysis with teacher answer sheet.
  • Plate Tectonics Map
  • Plate Tectonic Puzzle
  • Group Reading Activity
  • Anchor Chart Planning Sheet
  • Grading Rubric
  • Exit Cards
  • Enrichment Activity to review the 5 Geographical Themes

You are encouraged to modify all assignments by Geography and Math Made Easy to meet the needs of your student and for time limitations. You may elect to use all or just a few of the activities in this lesson, but it gives you plenty to choose from.

NEW! Africa Geography — Africa Rift Valley: Breakin Up Is Hard To Do (SONG ONLY)

By Geography & Math Made Easy

A zip file reader is needed to open the file.

For the FULL VERSION of the lesson, click here.

This is a fun and musical way to discuss a tough subject on plate boundaries around the African Rift Valley. It sits along a divergent boundary where the Somali Plate and African Plate are drifting apart.

An MP3 of the song is included in this lesson.

OBJECTIVES:

  1. The learner will listen to and analyze the song.
  2. The learner will understand how physical processes shape patterns in the physical environment specific to tectonic forces.
  3. The learner will describe different landforms such as trenches and lakes near Africa’s Great Rift Valley and the physical processes that cause their development.

LESSON INCLUDES:

  • Detailed teacher instructions
  • Suggesting videos (Not mandatory for lesson)
  • Lyrics to song sheet
  • Song analysis + teacher answer sheet.
