Estimating Square Roots Activity

By Jennifer Allain

There are 14 number lines (1-15 per 8th grade expectations). There are boxes on the top and bottom of each line. I have students put the whole numbers in the boxes on the bottom of the number line and corresponding square root above it but you can switch depending on your preference. Then I have students place the irrational numbers on the appropriate number line. I encourage them to make it as accurate as possible (closer to the perfect square, closer to the half, etc.)

* I have students highlight the perfect squares before they cut.

Function Rules and Tables Worksheet Identifying Domain and Range Activity

By Mathologist

This resource includes a guided notes to help understand function rules and tables, with a focus on the concepts of domain and range. Designed for middle and high school students, it offers explanations and practice problems to help students grasp how input-output relationships work in functions.

Students will learn:

  • What a function is: An introduction to the concept of functions as relationships between two sets, where each input (from the domain) has a unique output (in the range).
  • Function rules: How to interpret and apply function rules, which are the mathematical operations or formulas that link the input values (domain) to their corresponding output values (range).
  • Tables of values: How to create and interpret tables that show input-output pairs, helping students visualize how function rules work in practice.
  • Domain and range: Clear explanations of these key concepts, including how to determine the domain (the set of all possible input values) and the range (the set of all possible output values).
