This lesson was designed to be used on the first day of a year-long 11th-grade American Literature course. The lesson includes a poetry packet with 7 poems by diverse American authors. Each of the poems raises important questions about what "America" represents. A land of freedom and equality? A refuge for immigrants? A diverse and inclusive nation? Or a land with entrenched inequality? A saber-rattling evil empire?

Here is a list of the poems:

1. Ada Limón, "A New National Anthem" (2018) — our new Poet Laureate!

2. Emma Lazarus, "The New Colossus" (1883)

3. Walt Whitman, "I Hear America Singing" (1860)

4. Langston Hughes, "I, Too" (1923) — responding directly to Whitman!

I know how crazy supply drop off/meet the teacher/open house can be for a teacher. Parents and students are coming and going, they want to talk to you, or they want to know what to do with their stuff, or where to find things. 3. In the Print dialog, look for the "Page Sizing & Handling" section.
4. Select "Multiple".
5. Under "Pages per sheet," select 2.
6. You can also adjust the layout (e.g., portrait or landscape) and orientation.
7. Click Print.

• Ensure your printer supports printing multiple pages per sheet.
• Make sure the print layout is correct (portrait or landscape) to optimize how the two pages appear.

Each name tent is a half page (landscape). Copy on card stock paper to make them stronger. Fold the page in half and stand on the desk. Students fill in the sections and use color to express themselves!
