Are you in need of an engaging professional development for your teachers? We expect our teachers to be engaging with their students but we rarely engage our teachers with their learning. Additionally, as teachers, we got away from using hands-on resources in the classroom when COVID-19 happened. Hands-on resources give students a tangible, experiential way for learners to engage with concepts, making abstract ideas more concrete and understandable. By physically manipulating objects or engaging in interactive activities, students can grasp complex concepts more easily and retain information better. Now it is time to refresh our memory on the hands-on resources we can use in the classroom or that we have buried somewhere. 

This Canva Presentation is a copy that you can edit and is centered around giving teachers engaging ideas to use for centers or rotations.  The professional development is editable and can be altered to fit your teachers’ needs.

Professional Development: Addressing Behavior Issues
Are you ready to energize your next professional development session? Transform the traditional PD into an interactive and unforgettable experience with a Survivor-themed twist! This unique approach engages teachers in challenges that mirror real-life classroom scenarios, promoting collaboration, teamwork, and strategic thinking around behavior management.

The session kicks off by organizing teachers into “tribes,” where they collaborate from the start by creating a tribe name. Once in their groups, they’ll be presented with behavior management scenarios—common classroom challenges that need immediate attention. Within their tribes, teachers will discuss and develop strategies to de-escalate or address these issues effectively. Each tribe will select a representative to share their group’s approach with the other teams.

Over the course of the PD, teachers will engage in four additional scenario discussions, each designed to encourage collaboration and learning from one another’s experiences. This lesson is based on my own personal experience as a participant on a USA-Mexico border tour project organized by Rethinking Schools & Global Exchange that provided first-hand experience and knowledge concerning the effects of U.S. foreign policy, such as NAFTA, on the lives of ordinary people who reside in the Tijuana area. Students will be prompted to delve far beyond the mainstream explanation that answers the critical question as to why people cross the U.S.-Mexico border. This lesson will have students examine the broader context, and underlying factors to this question, which intimately tie itself to Mexico's agricultural economy. Students will identify the causal puzzle pieces, and then create a ‘LOOP’ (web) diagram that will serve to demonstrate their understandings of how these underlying causes interconnect with one another. Objective: The objective of the game "Oops" is to get your teammates to guess a word without using certain pre-defined words or phrases associated with it - these are called "Oopsies"

Gameplay:

1. The clue giver selects a number from the selection board, revealing the word to be described as well as the "oopsies" associated with it.
2. The clue giver must then describe the word without using any of the "oopsies".
3. The guessers on the team try to guess the word based on the clues given. The guesser sits with their back turned to the slide, while the clue giver faces the slide.
4. The guesser can make as many guesses as they want within 1 minute.
5. If a teammate guesses the word correctly, the team earns a point. However, if the clue giver uses an "oopsie," they forfeit a point.
6. After the minute is up or the word is correctly guessed, play passes to the next team.
7. Play continues back and forth until all the slides have been used or a set number of rounds has been completed.
8. The team with the most number of points wins.
