Homeschool Science Task Cards (by date, oldest first)

Sunrise/Sunset/Earth’s Axis/Seasons/Shadows/Tilt  Scavenger Hunt 

Hi fellow teachers

I often do scavenger hunts in grade 4 to 7  classrooms. I find them particularly useful when I’m feeling tired or lacking energy (hey, we’ve all been there).

Why do I like them?

1. They are easy to set up, 
2. The students get to move around
3. The students are focussed & engaged
4. The students enjoy it 
5. The teacher is free to take notes, observe and give guidance, if necessary. 

It can look chaotic, but if observed you can see students really trying, really reading the information, and really collaborating and cooperating.

How it works:

There are two components:

1. A two page worksheet (print double-sided, one per student)
2. 12 informational panels that contain the answers to the questions (these need to be printed on one side, cut in half and pinned in various locations around your room).
3. Hand out the worksheet and off they go!

My students are currently doing this very activity as I write!

The whole activity takes about 40 minutes and I might suggest watching a couple of Youtube videos on the topic to ‘get them in the mood.

How to use the task cards?

• Station activities: Set up different stations around the classroom, each with few of the task cards. Students rotate through stations in small groups, working together to discuss the concepts and answer the questions. This keeps them moving and engaged.

• Game format: **(This is my favorite way of using the task cards!)**Turn the task cards into a game where students earn points for their teams by correctly answering questions. Divide the students in groups of 3-4, print a set of cards for each group and an answer sheet. Set the timer to 35 minutes and have the groups discuss the topics and answer the questions. The group getting the highest score receive bonus points on the Quiz/Test. This makes learning competitive in a friendly way and can be very engaging for all types of learners.

• Pair and share: Pair students of different learning levels together. Each pair works on answering a task card and then shares their insights with another pair, fostering peer teaching and active engagement.

Asia, in particular, faces some of the most severe consequences of climate change, including rising sea levels, more frequent and intense natural disasters, and changes in agricultural patterns. By teaching about the climate change crisis in Asia, students will learn about the specific challenges that people in this region face. Students will read about 10 effects of climate change on Asia and will work together to find solutions.

Many countries in Asia are already experiencing the effects of rising sea levels, which are putting millions of people at risk of flooding, displacement, and human disease. By learning about these 10 human impacts on the environment and global climate change challenges, we can better understand the urgency of taking action to reduce our carbon emissions and greenhouse gasses and mitigate the impacts of climate change.

Students will work in cooperative groups rotating throughout the 10 carousel stations and will analyze the various solutions, deciding, which would be the best solution for each climate change issue. Groups will simply need to back up their decision.
