Looking for a fun way to incorporate themed vocabulary into your classroom or homeschool? Use these weekly thematic word work units to introduce new words and practice spelling, handwriting, sentence building, and drawing. Each week features a different themed picture or pictures, six vocabulary words to learn, and five days of quick, fun activities using those words. Daily activities are numbered to keep the student on track and are quick enough to be used as morning work or in a literacy center. All units include five weeks of vocabulary work so that in months with four weeks you can choose the themes that best fit your classroom. Also included: black and white versions of all five weeks for easier printing. This download is for the full color version of the Apple Orchard week in the September unit. To get the other weeks of work for September and/or the black and white version of the Apple Orchard week, check out the September Unit. This unit is great for a classroom but also works perfectly in a homeschool. The daily format mimics several homeschool vocabulary programs to make it easy to use alongside older siblings. Pair the themes up with your themed unit studies for added learning! This lesson was designed to be used on the first day of a year-long 11th-grade American Literature course. The lesson includes a poetry packet with 7 poems by diverse American authors. Each of the poems raises important questions about what "America" represents. A land of freedom and equality? A refuge for immigrants? A diverse and inclusive nation? Or a land with entrenched inequality? A saber-rattling evil empire?

Here is a list of the poems:

1. Ada Limón, "A New National Anthem" (2018) — our new Poet Laureate!

2. Emma Lazarus, "The New Colossus" (1883)

3. Walt Whitman, "I Hear America Singing" (1860)

4. Langston Hughes, "I, Too" (1923) — responding directly to Whitman!

5. Claude McKay, "America" (1921)

6. James Lasdun, "The Question" (2012) — is America "good or bad"?

7. Tony Hoagland, "America" (2003)

This resource also comes with a classwork packet that features discussion questions on the poems by Ada Limôn, Emma Lazarus, and Langston Hughes. The discussion questions come on three handouts, each of which contains 7 questions about a particular poem. Each handout also has a quick write where students can answer one of the questions in writing.

How might the concept of "America" represent a set of ideals and promises? Has this nation lived up to its ideals and promises? How might the idea of America be different from the reality?

I envisaged this to be a September week 1 internet activity. It will give students an opportunity to think about how other people perceive them. It could also be used as a lesson in how to search Google effectively or used as a dictionary / thesaurus activity, where students have to find descriptive words in order to search for appropriate pictures on Google Images.

These have been doing the rounds on FaceBook and email recently. You may have received posters / postcards entitled "Teachers...." or "Moms..." and then under the title are a series of photos with captions like;

Each caption is accompanied by an image of what that person thinks about the other person or group of people.

The sample here is of the "Teacher..." postcard. This is NOT what I am selling. I am selling a similar template entitled, "Students..." It is laid out the same as the teacher one with the same titles (the word teacher has been replaced with student), however, the pictures are missing. Students must search Google Images for appropriate pictures that characterize themselves. The photo titles are as follows;
