DESCRIPTION

• Students always need additional support in mastering the skill of inferencing. You can use these four sets of 16 Novel Multiple-Choice Inference Task Cards to help students practice making inferences.

• Students do NOT need any background knowledge (or need to have read the books) to answer these Inference Multiple-Choice Questions! The passages were carefully selected, so students can make general inferences whether they have read the books or not. :-)

EACH OF THE SIX NOVELS INCLUDE THE FOLLOWING:

Task Cards and Task Card ANSWER KEYS (and Student Answer Sheet)

• The first set of Inference Task Cards for each novel consists of a short selection/passage from the book followed by an inference-based question. There are four multiple choice answers that students choose from. Students read the passage and choose the correct answer. Students will need to pay close attention to details to choose the correct answer. The inference questions are centered around character traits, character relationships, and situations.

• The second set of 16 Inference Task Cards for each novel is the actual “Answer Key” set of the first set of Task Cards. The Task Card Answer Keys highlight the correct multiple-choice answer in the color red and highlights relevant evidence that supports the correct answer in the color yellow.

• This is engaging practice for your students as it is perfect for mini-lessons, whole class instruction, cooperative learning, intervention groups, literacy centers, and small group instruction.

Inference Tests and ANSWER KEYS (Print and Digital)

• Also included are "Test Format" versions of the Inference Task Cards (same passages). This includes ANSWER KEYS as well! The tests consist of 16 multiple-choice inference questions. (There's one Test and Answer key for each novel.)

Inference Graphic Organizer (Print and Digital)

• One-page Three-Column Graphic Organizer Chart that requires students to make evidence-based inferences. Students record the following information in the Inference Graphic Organizer: Information from the text, their own Prior/Background Knowledge, and Inferences. This is a great scaffolding tool for ELL and Special Ed students.

Inference Bookmarks

• This bookmark includes sentence stems consistent with making inferences. Students can reference these inference stems to stimulate their thinking, increase comprehension, and actively engage in reading and discussion. Students can also use these inference stems in their writing! These bookmarks can be used to support reading comprehension in any text.

Suggestions on how you can use the Multiple-Choice Inference Task Cards:

1. Quiz or Test - You can make a copy of the set of Task Cards and distribute to each student as a quiz or test. You, as the teacher , can then select the Task Card Inference question that students performed the lowest on and use that to review and develop/modify your instruction.

2. Small Group Instruction - You can have students engage in small group instruction where you provide additional support on the skill of inferencing. These Inference Task Cards will support that type of instruction. You can have all students in small groups practice with the same inference task card question number or you can distribute 1-2 Task Cards to each student to practice, then review.

3. Mini Lesson - You can load these Inference Task Cards on the Smartboard and use them to demonstrate how to make an inference. They can also be used to discuss the importance of details and how they are used to encourage inferential thinking. You can even use these Task Cards to discuss the difference between relevant details and irrelevant details. Finally, you can use these Inference Task Cards during the guided practice portion of your lesson.

4. Formative Assessment / Exit Slips - These Inference Task Cards make a great, quick formative assessment! You can easily check for understanding by distributing 1-2 Task Cards to each student to complete. You can circulate the room to do a "Quick Check" to see if students "Got it." You can also use these Task Cards as Exit Slips by distributing 1-2 Task Cards to each student to complete and hand in to you before they leave.

5. Partner Study - You can have students pair up and “test each other.” Partners not only ask each other to choose the correct multiple-choice answer, but to highlight or underline specific details in the selection/passage to support their inference-based answer. The Answer Key set of Task Cards are helpful in the sense that students can take ownership of reviewing the correct answers and sharing that with their partners**.**

6. Test Prep Review - You can use these Task Cards to review how to answer multiple-choice questions. You can also use these cards to teach students a variety of multiple-choice strategies (process of elimination, context clues, textual evidence, tone, etc.) to help them select the right answers to questions and aid comprehension.

The biography introduces students to Yang's experience growing up as one of the only Asian-American students in predominantly white schools in California. As such, it introduces readers to many of the themes that will emerge in American Born Chinese: the painful experience of social exclusion, the threat of racial stereotypes, the healing power of literature, etc. (3 pages)

• Discussion Question Handouts (x9): Thirty pages of higher-order discussion questions guaranteed to inspire profoundly thoughtful class discussions! This unit features double-sided handouts with 8-10 questions for each of the book's 9 chapters. The discussion questions are the beating heart of these lesson plans. This bundle has four play scripts written for young performers: Hamlet, Macbeth, Richard III and A Midsummer Night's Dream; and eight digital activities ideal for distance learning: six close reading activities and two digital writing units. The digital resources would span fourteen lessons. These resources are perfect for Distance Learning in 5th grade or 6th grade, and are ideal for students learning about World History, or some of his famous plays.

Firstly, there are four play scripts specifically written for young performers. The scripts are perfect for class performances or for guided reading sessions. The play scripts are for Hamlet, Macbeth, Richard III and A Midsummer Night's Dream.

Figurative Language Short Passage Sets are a no-prep, printable close reading activity that's perfect for middle school and high school. Each passage has between 206-226 words and is filled with between 14-19 examples of figurative language, such as hyperbole, metaphor, simile, and personification. I’ve found that although my students can tell me the definition of these terms, simile is the only one they can truly pick out in a text. As a result, their writing is filled with overused similes that need work! These figurative language passage sets are rigorous, use higher-level words and phrases, and in addition to merely identifying the different types, students will be asked to discuss the impact it has on the reader, as they’re asked to do on standardized testing.

Activity:
Students can complete all three worksheets in each set as part of a sub packet, but if you don't see them for a full block then assign only one page each day you're out (you'll get even more bang for your buck!) If you teach allusion, alliteration, idiom, or onomatopoeia, you can ask students to include those in Task 2 where they will be asked to continue the passage using a similar writing style. I have left some blanks on the checklist for this very purpose.

This unit was designed to have more than enough rigor for Honors, IB, and AP courses. Hold your students accountable for completing the nightly homework by beginning every class with a quick vocab and reading quiz. Facilitate dynamic discussions that motivate students to become attached to the thrill generating shared knowledge. Challenge students to explicate textual details using a wide range of interpretive lenses: historicist, psychoanalytic, feminist, etc. Inspire students to arrive at a whole new depth of analysis!

Here are some highlights from the curriculum:

• Biographical Sketch of Mary Shelley (Pre-Reading Handout): Mary Shelley's mother was the most important feminist political philosopher of the 18th century: Mary Wollstonecraft. But when Wollstonecraft gave birth to Mary Shelley, she became infected with sepsis and died shortly thereafter. Is it any accident that Mary Shelley would write a novel about a protagonist who is repulsed by his own offspring? To what extent did Shelley perceive herself as a kind of monster? These and many other questions get students thinking about the relation between Mary Shelley's turbulent life and her literary masterpiece. (2 pages)

• Themes in Frankenstein (Pre-Reading Handout): Because the full title of Shelley's novel is Frankenstein; or, The Modern Prometheus, this handout introduces students to the Prometheus myth and challenges students to ponder how Shelley might have sought to update or rewrite the myth for the modern era. What happens when humans develop technologies — like Prometheus's act of stealing fire — that should remain the rightful provenance of nature? Should characters like Prometheus and Frankenstein be admired as rebellious heroes? Or should they be despised as an arrogant overreachers? Get students thinking before they even crack the cover of Shelley's novel! (2 pages)

• Discussion Question Handouts: Thirty pages of higher-order discussion questions guaranteed to inspire profoundly thoughtful class discussions! This unit features double-sided handouts with 8-10 questions for each of the novel's 10 sections. The discussion questions are the beating heart of these lesson plans. They challenge students to build interpretive arguments that require the support of carefully selected textual evidence — leading to keen interpretive insights! (30 pages)

• Vocabulary Lists: Lists of 10 vocabulary words for every reading assignment, complete with definitions and sample sentences with the words as used in Frankenstein. A total of 100 words. (10 pages)

• Vocabulary & Reading Quizzes: Quizzes with 10 questions per reading assignment. Build students’ vocabularies while holding them accountable for the nightly reading homework. Each quiz contains roughly 7 questions on vocabulary words plus another 3 questions on reading comprehension. Grading these quizzes is simple and quick. They’re an easy way to log 10 more grades in your gradebook. Answer keys included. (20 pages)

• Literary Devices Worksheet: This worksheet challenges students to identify the literary devices used in fifteen quotations from Frankenstein. The literary devices include metaphor, simile, personification, hyperbole, oxymoron, allusion, onomatopoeia, and more. This bundle also features a glossary with definitions of the literary devices as well as examples of how each device is used in Shelley's novel — so you can review the devices with students before they tackle the worksheet. The worksheet can be used either as a quiz or as a fun refresher. Answer key included. (3 pages)

• Quotation Race: Students work in pairs to identify the speakers of 25 key quotations from Frankenstein. Introduce this fun activity when you need to mix things up, or to refresh students' memories in preparation for the AP exam. Answer key included. (4 pages)

• Q3 Practice Essay: Designed for AP Lit teachers, this in-class practice essay will allow students to rehearse the "Q3" essay from the AP Literature and Composition Exam. The assignment asks students to choose from among three recent Q3 prompts that featured Frankenstein as one of the recommended works of literary merit. (5 pages)

• Analytical Writing Assignment: Challenge students to take their interpretations one step further by writing an analytical paper on Mary Shelley's wonderfully complex novel. Let students choose from one of eight profoundly thought-provoking sample topics — or invite them to develop a similar topic of their own. Rubric included. (5 pages)

This Figurative Language Short Passage BUNDLE includes four passages with 3 close reading and writing worksheets each - for a total of 12 high-quality worksheets! Answer Keys Included!

Figurative Language Short Passage Sets are a no-prep, printable close reading activity that's perfect for middle school and high school. Each passage has between 206-226 words and is filled with between 14-19 examples of figurative language, such as hyperbole, metaphor, simile, and personification. I’ve found that although my students can tell me the definition of these terms, simile is the only one they can truly pick out in a text. As a result, their writing is filled with overused similes that need work! These figurative language passage sets are rigorous, use higher-level words and phrases, and in addition to merely identifying the different types, students will be asked to discuss the impact it has on the reader, as they’re asked to do on standardized testing.

Simply print and go! There is truly no preparation needed, which is why this set is perfect to leave for sub plans, bell ringers, homework, test prep, review or assessment!

*As an optional review activity, use my No-prep Four Corners Figurative Language Activity resource for a fun whole-group game, then use this passage set for assessment!

Activity:
Students can complete all three worksheets in each set as part of a packet, but I suggest using one each day. If you teach allusion, alliteration, idiom, or onomatopoeia, you can ask students to include those in Task 2 where they will be asked to continue the passage using a similar writing style. I have left some blanks on the checklist for this very purpose.

Reflection:
The class can review the answers and comments as a whole group when the activity is complete. You’ll be surprised how much better they’ll get at figurative language after being exposed to some high-quality examples!
