Prompts, each on individual task cards, can be given at the start of class, end of class, for homework, as part of a stations writing or discussion activity, or even as part of an emergency substitute plan. I personally like to begin each class during the month of December with a prompt to really get students in the spirit of Christmas. The possibilities for use are endless during a time of year when every second you can get to be hands-off is precious and your students will appreciate the time to reflect on this very special holiday.
