Lately, upsetting things have been happening in the world and our students are very much aware of them. Tens of thousands of people have protested on the streets to make their voices heard about all kinds of issues that students care about including racism, inequality, policing, discrimination, etc. Protests have spread across the nation and seem to rival the historic demonstrations of the civil rights movement. It is important for us to bring these topics into our classrooms—because students want to be part of the conversation and share their thoughts and feelings about the very issues that affect them - including racism.

This resource features 48 questions related to racism that can be used as writing prompts, discussion/debate questions, or both! World War II fiction novels offer high school teachers a powerful tool for engaging students in historical learning. I admit that my own historical fiction novel, Hearts at War, is on the list! The first lesson is interactive and involves students cutting out facts, and then sorting these facts into paragraphs. In the second lesson the students need to use these facts to write four paragraphs. Then, in the third lesson children need to choose the most important facts and include these in an introduction; after this they need to answer several questions on a prompt sheet before writing up their conclusion. In the final lesson students need to check their draft paragraphs for mistakes before writing up their work on to a neat copy on the template provided.
