Introduction to Abacus, Subtraction Number 5-9

By Lynette Yung

In the activity, the pre-k and kindergarten students focus on subtracting numbers 5-9 with the abacus.

This activity helps with number sense and solidifies the number relationships. Students will be able to visualize take away/subtract numbers; they will see items becoming less. This also introduces students to decomposing numbers. This resource also has fun activities, like a game of who wins, color by number, puzzles, and a maze

In this activity, we are subtracting numbers 5–9. This is contained in one column of the abacus and all the bottom beads. Abacus is easy to understand; it promotes tactile learning.

The abacus used has 1 bead on top and 4 beads on the bottom. This activity focuses on the top bead (has a value of 5) and the bottom beads (has a value of 1 for each bead).

All the bottom beads have a value of 1, and the top bead has a value of 5.

If you are curious about the wonders of abacus, you can check out my blog.

Montessori Math: Large & Small Number Cards to 9999, Comparing Numbers 1st Grade

By Jessica Renee Montessori - JRMontessori

The Montessori Number Cards introduce children to the decimal system. Children read and build large numbers and develop an understanding of the written numerical symbols for each category of the decimal system (i.e. units, tens, hundreds, thousands). This resource includes a printable version of the large number cards, the small number cards, a bonus set of zero cards which are helpful when making numbers that include zeros, and a bonus set of cards to use when presenting the association between the Golden Beads and the numerals for 1, 10, 100, and 1000.

The cards are designed to be printed on 8.5" x 11" paper without any borders to be cut off. The dimensions are as follows:

Small Cards:

4 digit numbers are 5.5" x 1.9375"

3 digit numbers are 4.125" x 1.9375"

2 digit numbers are 2.75" x 1.9375"

1 digit numbers are 1.375" x 1.9375"

Large Cards:

4 digit numbers are 7.3342" x 2.625"

3 digit numbers are 5.5013" x 2.625"

2 digit numbers are 3.6684" x 2.625"

1 digit numbers are 1.8356" x 2.625"

These cards can be used on their own to practice making numbers, or they can be used with some of my other resources:

Abacus Maze-Numbers 0 to 4 Mazes

By Lynette Yung

Counting and coloring Numbers 0 to 4 on the abacus in a maze. These number sense mazes are perfect for pre-k and kindergarten to gain awareness of the numbers 0–4. Students practice number recognition on both the numeral and the abacus. This also encourages students to subitize and use number sense.

There are 4 different mazes, and answer key.

What is subitizing?

Subitizing is the ability to quickly recognize the number of objects in a small group without counting them individually. It's essentially the ability to perceive the quantity of objects at a glance. This skill is particularly evident with small numbers, typically up to around 5 or 6 objects in this activity, 0–4.

What is number sense?

Number sense is the ability to identify and conceptualize numbers, like 1, 2, 3. The activity helps compare the abacus beads with the numerals.

Apple Counting Book | Emergent Reader | Fall Math Activity | Mini Readers

By Morgan Jeffries

Apple Themed Counting Book - Emergent Reader:

This is such a fun fall themed counting activity. I would cut out and staple the apple tree counting book together beforehand.

There is #2 pages of colorful apples as well as black and white apples. You can have your student’s practice holding scissors and cut the apples out or if they are not ready for that step you can cut them out yourself as well. Once the apples are cut out they will read the sentence and then glue the correct amount of apples to each tree. There is a black and white apple tree book (that you can have your student’s color) as well as a colorful one as well depending on which one you would like to use.

At the end of either book the last page also has an area where they read how many apples should be on each line and then draw the correct amount of apples according to what the number says.

Winter Math Activity - Montessori Making 10 Bead Stair Snowman Extension Game

By Jessica Renee Montessori - JRMontessori

Are you looking for the perfect way to delight your little learners this holiday season? This Winter Math Activity – Montessori Making 10 Bead Stair Snowman Extension Game combines their love of snowmen with a fun way to practice math. This activity is perfect for the day before winter break, day after Christmas break, or any time you want to add a little winter fun!

Perfect for Montessori and lower elementary classrooms, this game brings the wintery outdoors inside and uses the colored bead stair to teach your students the combinations of numbers – 1-9 – which make ten. This is excellent preparation for linear addition with the Snake Game. Here’s a quick overview of the two activities included:

Activity 1: Match the Snowman Heads and Bodies: Add to the winter festivities with this fun matching game. Students need to match the snowmen heads and bodies in a way that help them in making ten. This also includes a handy ‘control of error’ to guarantee the answers are correct.

Activity 2: Create Combinations of 10 and Write Down the Equations: All your students need to do is create combinations of numbers which make ten (1 + 9, 4 + 6) and write down the equations. This a great way not only to practice math, but also to help your students better develop their skill in writing equations.

Give your students a winter-themed math lesson that will make the holidays extra festive this year. It’s a great way to combine learning and fun!

Montessori Math Place Value Activity Booklets: Numeracy and Golden Beads | Small

By Jessica Renee Montessori - JRMontessori

Place value is so important for a good mathematical foundation. Do your Lower Elementary students get enough math practice with the Montessori Golden Bead material? Do they have a hard time moving from a concrete understanding of numbers to the more abstract written form? Save yourself some time and aggravation with these printable booklets which are so much more fun than worksheets. Each booklet increases in difficulty and can be used alongside the Montessori Golden Beads (or Base Ten Blocks) to build better number sense and help students make the connection between the beads, the numbers, and place value.

**This product has been updated and may vary slightly from what you see in the photos. See the PREVIEW to know exactly what you will get.**

You can also buy a larger version that breaks things down a bit more for beginners.

Here are some reasons this resource will make things easier for you in the classroom:

  1. The booklets are super easy to make and instructions are included.
  2. You get 12 different booklets (of increasing difficulty). They start with teaching the unit beads and end with numbers into the thousands.
  3. I've included two different formats for teacher convenience: 1) Suitable for printing class sets of booklets and 2) Suitable for printing individual sets of booklets for a few students.
  4. Colourful ANSWER KEY booklets are included so children can check their own work.
  5. Your students will be more engaged than doing the same activity on a worksheet.
  6. I've included prep and presentation instructions for teachers so you can get this activity up and running quickly.

Here's what other teachers have to say:

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ "Such a great resource to practice counting, build place value and work with the golden bead material. Not only is this product great for a Montessori classroom, but the concept is transferable to be used with base ten blocks too! I love that students will have their own little books; this always elevates their interest compared to filling out a worksheet. Assembly was really easy too, I actually prefer to staple the booklets first and then stack two sets to cut with the paper cutter, so quick!!"—Buyer

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ "Our students loved this work and ask for more. They are so proud of their booklets."—Marie M.

You will also love my other Golden Beads related Montessori printables...
➡️ The classic Montessori BRING ME GAME but even better! Numbers are represented on the back with Golden Beads.
