This cactus themed Color by CVC Word freebie is a preview of our full size Color by CVC Word units. This freebie comes with a "short a" puzzle featuring the words cat, mad, jam, and pan. Students can use the picture clue puzzle or the word clue puzzle. In the picture clue puzzle, students look at the picture of the word and then find the corresponding word to color. In the word clue puzzle, students have the CVC word to look at and find the matching word to color. No prep! Just print and go.

**This freebie comes with short a only, but the full units come with all five vowel families, each in two difficulty levels for 10 puzzles total.**

Letter sound fluency is an important foundational skill for reading success. This activity gives students a quick and engaging way to practice and improve their letter sound fluency. Students point to colorful grasshoppers along a path as they say the letter sounds. They can use the same strips repeatedly and work to increase their speed. This file contains 18 different lower case letter strips. Simply print, cut apart and laminate the strips. Pass out individual strips for a quick warm up before guided reading groups, use them as a reading center, or keep them available in the classroom for practice. This two page resource is a must for a pre-reading assignment for the book Stellaluna by Janell Cannon. It includes four statements where students need to decide if they strongly agree, somewhat agree, somewhat disagree, and strongly disagree. They then have to give their reasoning. These four pre-reading reflection questions get students' brains activated and thinking about various themes, lessons, and ideas they will come across in the novel. It is great to see what students are thinking on these big topics before they begin the novel!! Not only is it fun and engaging for your students, the responses students give are also very interesting to read as a teacher!

** Research has shown that deeper comprehension takes place when students are engaged in activities that bridge prior knowledge with what they are about to learn.
