This phonics book was made with kindergarteners and first graders in mind.

The sounds included are short vowel (cvc), long vowel (cvc silent e), common blends, and digraphs.

Use this journal as you teach different sounds.

After instructing the students have them use the journal to record words that they find while reading. This is particularly good if you use phonics readers / decodable readers. I partner my students up and have them partner read from the reader and record any words that they find at the end of each

page they are reading. This gets the students reading, saying, and discussing the words together! What better practice than that!

Learning to read seems complicated but the top skills children need are phonemic awareness, decoding, orthographic mapping, fluency skills, comprehension, and lots of persistence and practice! Looking for an activity to help students work on decoding and encoding simultaneously? Short u Flip, Tap, Write, Build, Use resource helps students practice just that.

How? Students flip a picture card over, these are focused on a specific phonics pattern, to get their word. Next students work on tapping out the sound. They can use the Elkonin boxes or the guide dots to help track the sounds tapped. After they will build the words by writing a letter for each sound made and using letter tiles(that are provided, so no need to search or organize tiles, just print, cut, and use). Lastly, the student uses the word to create a sentence.

This activity makes for a great center, small group work, independent practice, and even homework.

Need a way to hold them accountable?

No worries, there is a recording sheet available where students can record a few of their flips. All they have to do is write the word and the sentence on the sheet. This gives you a glimpse into their understanding and insures that they are indeed working during center, small group, and independent work time.

• Students learn a poem for the rules behind Hard C and the rules behind Soft C
• As the poem is learned, the dramatic play of the Cat and Mouse continues with each line as the other students perform arm motions to the rhyme.
• Students interact with the anchor charts to solidify WHEN c says /c/ and WHEN c says /s/
• Students create their own anchor chart to further stick the learning
• The lesson wraps up with an anchor chart for the room for reference to the Hard C and Soft C rule with the characters of Cat and Mice that students won't forget.
• Follow up with a Bump it Game in Center rotations for a few days and finally, an assessment of the skill with a Word Sort with variations for different learning levels.
