Mental Math Montessori (by date, oldest first)

Ten dinosaur-themed skip counting and/or multiplication teaching Montessori-style puzzle games for kids.

For best results please print on thick card stock paper and laminate for durability, then cut up.

This is an introduction to abacus and the second lesson. Counting Numbers 5-9 Worksheets. The abacus used has 1 bead on top and 4 beads on the bottom. This activity focuses on the top bead (has a value of 5) and the bottom beads (has a value of 1 for each bead). Counting from five to nine. This activity also includes tracing numbers, coloring by number, pixel art coloring, matching numerals to objects, and abacus.

The abacus has been used for centuries and is utilized as a mathematical power tool that will help eliminate math anxiety. Included is a “filling” bucket to monitor students’ accomplishments and a certificate for completing Lesson 1.

Counting and coloring Numbers 0 to 4 on the abacus in a maze. These number sense mazes are perfect for pre-k and kindergarten to gain awareness of the numbers 0–4. Students practice number recognition on both the numeral and the abacus. This also encourages students to subitize and use number sense.

There are 4 different mazes, and answer key.

What is subitizing?

Subitizing is the ability to quickly recognize the number of objects in a small group without counting them individually. It's essentially the ability to perceive the quantity of objects at a glance. This skill is particularly evident with small numbers, typically up to around 5 or 6 objects in this activity, 0–4.

What is number sense?

Number sense is the ability to identify and conceptualize numbers, like 1, 2, 3. The activity helps compare the abacus beads with the numerals.

Do your Lower Elementary students need more practice with the Bead Stair, or with their basic math facts? Elementary age kids will love this counting and adding game inspired by the Montessori Snake Game. It can be played independently or with a partner, and is perfect as a work choice in a Montessori classroom, or as a center in a mainstream classroom. Not only is it a fun game, it also reinforces the quantity of 100, one-to-one correspondence, and subitizing. It's also perfect as a 100th Day activity! Try the Christmas version in December for a little seasonal fun.

Teaching Roman numerals is a fun way to practice addition and subtraction of 1 and 10. I've taken a classic Montessori math work (the Snake Game) and added a unique twist. The snakes in this set represent the Roman numerals from 1–100. If your lower elementary children are ready for a fun new challenge, these cards are the perfect independent activity to get them excited about math again.

Only 5 different Montessori beads are used to make the Roman numerals from 1-100. Can you guess what they are? One, five, ten, negative 1, and negative 10! Your students will count the beads in the snake image and then use the included cards to form the matching Roman numeral. As usual, they’ll love the satisfaction of checking the answer on the back of the card. And you’ll love that they can do this work independently! There’s even a fun worksheet to track which cards they’ve completed.
