Time allowance to complete:

5-10 minutes - read through the text individually.

40-50 minutes - answer questions using the text as guidance (including extension activity)

Time allowance to assess:

A class set of activities might take around 15-20 minutes to mark; the teacher can then send the students their marks automatically, which allows them to read back through their work. Nearly all answers are not automatically generated, but only require a small amount of work to assign points. This is because the aim is to get students writing answers and not to just have multiple choice options.

Students choose a photographer of interest (on their own or from a provided list) and then research specific information about them, creating a presentation in Microsoft PowerPoint or Google Slides. This lesson will have students explore & debate the five major compromises that were made at the Constitutional Convention in Philadelphia in 1787. The delegates were charged with the task of amending the Articles of Confederation. However, they quickly decided to replace the Articles and write a new constitution. Because the delegates came from all parts of the country, they differed on a number of key issues. In order to keep the convention going and ensure ratification of the Constitution, the delegates had to compromise a number of times. As a result, the final document is sometimes described as a "bundle" of compromises.

This resource is a 5th grade or 6th grade discussion based writing unit discussing who was the most influential Allied leader of World War II: Winston Churchill, Joseph Stalin or Franklin Roosevelt. The unit has been split into four separate lessons which will take students approximately 40-50 minutes each. The Google Slides activity is ideal for distance learning and perfect for students learning about World History or World War 2.

The first lesson involves students retrieving facts from informational texts about Winston Churchill, Joseph Stalin and Franklin Roosevelt, and typing these on to an included fact sheet. In the second lesson students need to use these facts to write three to four paragraphs about the individual Allied leaders. In the third lesson students need to use prompt sheets to write up an introduction and a conclusion. In the final lesson students need to check their draft paragraphs for mistakes before typing up their work using the template provided.

NO PREP is needed!

Students choose the landmarks they will research and then choose the software they will use to showcase their research. Students can choose to create a presentation, a brochure, or a newspaper using Web 2.0 tools (free, no download needed) or by using Microsoft Office or Google Apps. For classrooms with limited technology, this lesson can be completed with students working in pairs or small groups. In this lesson, students will gain a frame of reference for understanding how multiple factors can influence how history is written. This resource will prompt students to be able to answer not only “What happened?” BUT-- “How do you know?” and “Why do you believe your interpretation is valid?”

1. How-To-Use Teacher Guide- Shares main ideas, student outcomes, materials, standards/curriculum connections, and assessment/grading. You also get to see an overview of all the documents that are shared with the students.

2. African-American Heroes Research List - This list includes the African-American heroes available for research from the National Geographic website.

3. National Geographic Kids Website Guide- This document provides students with a detailed description on how to use the National Geographic Kids website, including pictures and steps.

4. Vocabulary Terms- 8 vocabulary terms and definitions related to this project: minority, equality, segregation, boycott, abolish, Civil Rights, prejudice, discrimination.

5. Vocabulary Quiz- This 8 question vocabulary quiz (format: Google Survey) is taken right from the vocabulary terms document.

6. Research Graphic Organizer - Graphic organizer for students to record their individual African-American heroes research. Includes an example!

7. Student Checklist and Project Reflection- This is this the final part of this research project. Students are asked (format: Google Survey) to fill out a checklist marking if they completed all aspects of the research project. They then reflect on what they did well on, what they can improve on, what they learned, and if they enjoyed the research project.
