Fun Winter Math Activities | First Grade Fractions | Worksheets with Cookies
By Epsilon Math Craft & Special Education
Embracing the New Year 2024 in winter, Introduce fraction notation with cookies! These digital / on paper resources will guide your First Level learners through fraction notation, using fun and engaging differentiated examples.
When thinking about how to teach fractions to your child, it’s important to focus not only on the rules of fractions but also on the meaning behind them. In these worksheets, students will first learn simple fraction notation and then match them to the correct corresponding shaded cookie through a variety of engaging and supportive activities.
The practice set part of this resource is differentiated into two levels and is perfect because it offers support for your below-level learners and above!
Note that you can provide the two levels to one student if you want him to grasp the lesson gradually. I use this method with all of my students :)
WHAT DO YOU GET?
Included are 17 worksheets that are divided into three different tasks.
Task 1:
A guided sheet for a student to write each simple fraction notation: the denominator first, as this tells us how many equal parts the cookie is being divided into. They can say this out loud as they write it. Then write the numerator which is the top number in a fraction. This shows how many parts of one whole cookie we took. Finally, a student will complete two phrases that interpret the fraction in words and as a notation.
Task 2:
Ask the student to match cookies which are divided into equal parts to their corresponding written fractions. there are two levels, two pages in each level.
level 1: Only simple fractions: half, thirds, and fourths.
level 2: One-whole, fifths, sixths, eights, ninths, and tenths.
Task 3:
Students will select all that represents a Half/Third/Fourth/Whole among different fractions representations.
