This lesson plan on Angelou's poem can be used in a variety of ways throughout the school year. For instance, the lesson is the perfect jumpstart for your unit on slavery, Civil Rights, poetry, or Women's Rights in America. As time moves on, many great Americans who have shaped the arts, sciences, sports, and history of our nation and culture get lost in time. The Great Americans Series of Biographies and Worksheets is an easy-to-read 200-word biography of just the highlights of each subject's life designed to keep young readers engaged. The questions worksheet ensures student reading comprehension and grasp of key points. The vocabulary page introduces and explains new words, phrases, and/or institutions students may not have been familiar with. This Figurative Language Short Passage Set about Rosa Parks is a no-prep, printable close reading activity that's perfect for middle school and high school. Use it during Women's History Month or any time of the year! Featuring Rosa Parks, this is a 216-word passage filled with 15 examples of figurative language, such as hyperbole, metaphor, simile, and personification. I’ve found that although my students can tell me the definition of these terms, simile is the only one they can truly pick out in a text. As a result, their writing is filled with overused similes that need work! This figurative language passage set is rigorous, uses higher-level words and phrases, and in addition to merely identifying the different types, students will be asked to discuss the impact it has on the reader, as they’re asked to do on standardized testing. Simply print and go! There is truly no preparation needed, which is why this set is perfect to leave for sub plans, bell ringers, homework, test prep, review or assessment!

*As an optional review activity, use my No-prep Four Corners Figurative Language Activity resource for a fun whole-group game, then use this passage set for assessment!
Activity:
Students can complete all three worksheets as part of a packet, but I suggest using one each day. If you teach allusion, alliteration, idiom, or onomatopoeia, you can ask students to include those in Task 2 where they will be asked to continue the passage using a similar writing style. I have left some blanks on the checklist for this very purpose.

Reflection:
The class can review the answers and comments as a whole group when the activity is complete. You’ll be surprised how much better they’ll get at figurative language after being exposed to some high-quality examples!

This 13-slide PowerPoint presentation covers the Revolutionary Era between 1763 and 1783. The Pre-Revolutionary Era lasted from 1763 through 1776 and the Revolutionary War lasted from 1776 to 1783. It is an ideal lesson for the Revolutionary War period or as a stand-alone resource for women’s history. The presentation includes descriptive text as well as primary sources. It is also a good resource during Women’s History Month.

Each slide contains information and graphics that highlight how women contributed during this period. Unlike during the Colonial Era, women began to take part politically, albeit in the form of writing or in choosing to boycott British goods. Nonetheless, it was a shift in women's roles in which women did not have a voice. This period challenged Americans to ask themselves what they sought in their new country. Not surprisingly, some women and African-Americans questioned whether they too should have equality in society. This question was not satisfactorily answered as a result of the war, but it did at least offer a platform wherein some people could pose the questions.

This 12 slide presentation about women in the United States military in World War II presents a broad and deep look at the nature of the four years between the bombing of Pearl Harbor and the end of World War II. Reading Assignment and Worksheet

This four-page Reading Assignment and Worksheet with Answer Key provides an overview of the various activities, attributes and activities of women in Native American tribal groups. It covers the time period from the pre-Columbian era through 1810 and highlights three different tribal groups. By the 1820s, the Native American tribes came under increasing pressure from American settlers and their lives began to change with westward expansion. These impacts will be addressed in separate resources about women and westward expansion.

Students can read this as an in-class assignment, a homework assignment or it can also be a group activity in a classroom. It is also ideally suited for home-schoolers or independent learners who want to learn more. A Worksheet with questions based on the reading is included, along with an Answer Key.

The worksheet is also available as a digital resource through Easel so students may complete it online.
