This set of 7 Hispanic Heritage Month Music and Dance Styles Reading Comprehension Passages is a vibrant collection that celebrates the rich cultural heritage of the Hispanic community.

Each passage focuses on a different music or dance style, providing an engaging exploration of its history, significance, and influence.

On January 28th, 1985, dozens of the time period’s most popular musicians gathered in Los Angeles to record a charity song for African famine relief. Setting stylistic differences and egos aside, they collaborated on a song that would make history. This documentary, which debuted at the 2024 Sundance Film Festival, examines how the song came to be, who was involved, and the implications of the recording.

This Doc (printable OR digital) asks students 9 thought-provoking questions for during and after viewing the film. This is NOT a guided viewing assignment; it's a series of thought-provoking questions that asks them to consider the film as a whole and to synthesize what they might already know about these musicians and the event with what they saw in the film. They are asked about the title, the lyrics to "We Are The World", the impact of the event, who planned the event and why, the artists who participated, the arrangement of the recording, the public's response, the impact of the song during this particular time period, etc.

I use this with my high school elective "Lyrics as Literature" with 9-12th graders, but I'd feel comfortable using it with upper middle school students as well.

Creating & Editing Audio and Music in Audacity gives students an opportunity to learn how to create and edit audio and music files for use in projects. A step-by-step tutorial for the program, along with three lessons are included in this unit. Additionally, resources including sites that offer free (non-copyrighted) music and sound downloads appropriate for student projects are included. Audacity is a free download.

Middle schoolers LOVE music and the opportunity to create authentic projects. This is a great introductory lesson prior to introducing more sophisticated music creation tools (such as Garageband) as well.

A brand new approach to the Recorder System! I use original and simple compositions for this one which I use this with my 3rd graders. We start off simple and get into more technical things along the way -- scaffolding made simple!. I find it's more beneficial than just teaching them 3 or 4 notes as I like to cultivate them a little more by discovering new notes, rhythms, and phrases. Use the chant or lullaby to help the bear feel better! Chant or sing this extension to the popular book "Bear Feels Sick" by Karma Wilson. Talk to the children prior to starting about what being a caring and good friend means and that friends help each other when they are sick. Then introduce the chant or song to the children and sing after every time that the says the bear feels sick. Use the rhythm chart to decode the rhythms and discover quarter rests. Use the song to listen and decode for the do solfege syllable. Adaptable for PreK-2nd grade.

Kids love their pop music, right? Want to integrate it into your classroom? This is great lesson to do with 4th and 5th graders that lets them listen to their favorite pop music while learning about musical form!

The lesson begins with a video introduction to form and then talks about elements of pop music and how it ascribes to a specific form. We talk about the intro, verse, chorus, bridge, and outro in detail, and then go onto our activity.

I cut out cards -- 1 intro, 3 verses, 3 choruses, 1 bridge, and 1 outro (or you can do it with a whiteboard/marker, or even as a unison class response) and give them to each student, then have have the kids sit on the floor. I then play an mp3 of a song which has 10 second clips of each of the sections (there is about a 2 second gap in between each clip and all clips are safe for little ears -- no profanity!) and have the students identify them by spelling them out on the floor in front of them

A great compromise to having your kids listen to their music and still satisfy a 4th and 5th grade standard in identifying the structure of music!
