Mastering VC words builds a strong foundation for decoding more complex words, improves reading fluency, and boosts confidence in early literacy development.

Benefits

  • Mastering sound blending

  • Developing fluency in reading phonetically regular words

  • Supports early literacy skill development

  • Lays the groundwork for advanced reading comprehension

Benchmark Literacy Phonics 1st Grade Unit 1 Four in a Row

By Mr. Lee's Learners

Do you use Benchmark Literacy? Are you looking for extra activities to use with your kids? This Four in a Row game is perfect to use in your classroom! It goes along with Benchmark Literacy Phonics Unit 1 - l-family blends (cl, bl, fl, pl, and sl). In this product you will find four different versions to use in your classroom. The first two pages of this document have only the decodable words for this unit. The third and fourth page of this document have decodable words along with the sight words. How I use Four in a Row in my classroom: The students play with a partner and each group gets a set of double sided counters. Our counters are yellow and red. One student is red and the other student is yellow. The students take turns and say a word. If the word is read correctly, the student can put a counter on that space. The other student gets a turn and place a counter on the space if they say the word correctly. If a student says a word incorrectly, they do not get to place a counter on the space and it is the other person’s turn. The game continues until one student has four counters in a row across, diagonally, or up and down. The cards can also be used as flashcards! Directions on how to play: • Students take turns drawing the cards from a face-down pile and try to say the word on the card. • If they can say the word correctly, they get to keep the card. If they cannot, the card goes on the bottom of the card for someone else to have a chance. If playing with only two students, the partner gets a turn and can keep the card if they know it. • When a Bang! card is drawn from the pile the student who drew it has to return all their cards to the bottom of the pile. Freebie-Ready Reads: A Daily Phonics/Phoneme Practice in Automaticity

By Come Alive Communications

Have you ever wished students in the prereading and early reading stage could have opportunities to be fluent and build automaticity? How can students who barely know letter names and sounds become fluent? Ready Reads are just what you are looking for.

Ready Reads are warm up activities for the eyes and the brain and can support any curriculum. Ready Read charts cumulatively follow the scope and sequence of UFLI and support the Science of Reading. Use these in small group, whole group on the projector, in partners for accountability, or for students to whisper read to themselves. They can easily be adapted in an I read, We read, You read or Your turn, My turn format. Ready Reads can be used for students to say the letter name and/or the letter sound practicing grapheme recognition as well as phoneme recall. For pre-readers and early readers alike, this activity builds the left to right progression of reading and builds fluency for letters and concepts already learned. This is the building block for automaticity and fluent reading.

This freebie gets you started up to lesson 3. Get the full resource for Kinder, 1st, and 2nd to build your students' automaticity here! Kinder here 1st-2nd *Coming Soon*
