Subitizing Domino Clip Cards || Numbers 1-12 || Domino Variations
By Pacific Street Playschool
Subitizing Domino Clip Cards || Numbers 1-12 || Domino Variations
These subitizing clip cards were created to be used in busy bins, activities for math center, an activity for small group instruction, or as an assessment tool.
What's Included?
. 22 black and white clip cards
. Single domino representations on each clip card
. 22 cards representing numbers 1-12
What is Subitizing?
Subitizing is a skill that involves quickly recognizing quantities without counting. As students develop their subitizing skills, they move through different phases, or levels, of subitizing:
Perceptual subitizing
This is the first phase of subitizing, and involves instantly recognizing small quantities, usually up to five. It's instinctive, and is often taught first because it's a building block for the next level. For example, a student might quickly name the quantity of four gems as "four".
Conceptual subitizing
This phase involves identifying the quantity of smaller groups within larger sets, and then combining them to name the total. For example, a student might see two fours in the eight of a domino. This phase requires more thought than perceptual subitizing.
How Do I Use These Cards?
. Simply print, cut, and laminate (these can be used over and over again for years to come)
. Encourage students to look at each card and group the numbers to get a total. This can be accomplished by counting each dot and adding together or by subitizing
. Promote fine motor skills by having students mark the correct answer with clothespins. You can differentiate for students by having them place buttons, pom-poms, or other small objects on the numbers as they identify them.
Suggested Uses:
. Assessment tool to determine students subitizing level
. Add to math centers for students to freely explore and count
. Add to morning boxes or busy boxes for students to complete
. Use as part of small group work to assess counting principles (stable order, correspondence, cardinality, abstraction, and order irrelevance).
. Use as part of transition times as (lining up, walking in halls, handwashing) to have students subitize while they wait
