Do you have an Abacus sitting in your classroom somewhere? The abacus is a wonderful manipulative that can grow with your students. Abacus builds strong number sense and subitizing.

CRA Approach for learning math.

Concrete. The “doing” stage uses concrete objects to model problems. In the concrete stage, the abacus can introduce mathematical concepts, like counting, addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division.

Representational. The “seeing” stage uses representations of the objects to model problems. In this stage, my worksheets involve drawing pictures while relating to the abacus.

Abstract. The “symbolic” stage uses abstract symbols such as numbers and operation symbols (+, × ,÷, –) to indicate addition, subtraction, multiplication, or division.
