Less than $5 Pre-K Music Resources (by date, latest first)

Make your ESL classroom look different from a regular education room by considering these multilingual musical instruments' names.

Each label takes up 1/4 of a page so they are nice and big, but not too obtrusive. There are 42 words for a total of 11 pages. Check out the preview of some pages in the pictures. They each feature the English name in big, bold black letters while the other languages are in a smaller font and in different colors. Languages included are Chinese (simplified/Red), Arabic (Violet), Russian (Green), and Spanish (Brown). To help aid meaning, I've included colored pictures and illustrations.

Use these 42 fun and colorful cards to explore musical instruments' names in 5 languages - use them as flashcards, a bulletin board or wall display, a memory matching game, or the foundation for the more difficult practice of your choice like recognizing words that and many more.

Using the books "'Slowly, Slowly, Slowly' said the Sloth" by Eric Carle and "Freeda the Cheetah" by JTK Belle, explore fast vs. slow tempo. Using the song "Slowly, Slowly, Slowly" have the students move like a sloth to the music. Explore various ways a sloth would move. Ask which animals move quickly and introduce "Freeda the Cheetah" and have them run and drop when the chant says to do so. Additional rhyming and tempo worksheets reinforce the tempo and rhyming words. Can be used and adapted for multiple grade levels.

Need a slow tempo lesson using a book? Used up the more popular books? Try this lesson set to the book "Slow Samson" by Bethany Christou. Use this lesson extension to the classic book "Bear Says Thanks" by Karma Wilson to engage your students further in this classic. Discuss gratitude and why it is important, then teach them the chant that will go along with this book. Additional rhythm vs. steady beat charts help to explain and reinforce differences between the two. Follow up with decoding worksheets to help students match words with their correct rhythm pattern. This lesson combines both books to demonstrate loud and soft sounds. Begin by talking about various sounds that can be made and then introduce "Quiet as a Mouse". Have the students quietly chant along as the mouse grows more frustrated that no one will play with it. Then go on to "Suki The Very Loud Bunny" to demonstrate loud sounds. Have the children move and play along with the chant. Use the rhythm and beat chart for the first book to explain rhythm vs. steady beat, as well as show that rests get a beat as well. Use the worksheet attached as a paper or digital activity through Easel. Also great to decode chants for rhythm syllables. Adaptable for grades PreK-2nd grade.

Using the book "Bear Can't Sleep" from the Bear Series, teach quarter rest and ostinato while lulling the bear to sleep! Use a bear puppet and have children sing and play while encouraging the bear to fall asleep. Adaptable for grades PreK-2nd grade with options of either a song or chant. Additional worksheet (which can be assigned digitally or printed out) and rhythm chart help reinforce decoding, reading and writing the quarter note rest.

This is a series of chants for various books in the Little Old Lady Series Books. Use these with your students from PreK-2nd grade to chant at various repetitive points in each story. Use the chants with the following books: There Was an Old Lady Who Swallowed Some Snow, There Was an Old Lady Who Swallowed a Bell, There Was an Old Lady Who Swallowed a Shell, There Was an Old Lady Who Swallowed a Rose, There Was an Old Lady Who Swallowed Some Books and There Was an Old Lady Who Swallowed a Truck.

Start with steady beat and then, if you wish, have students decode them for various rhythms. Add instruments such as hand drums, frame drums, etc. to add a musical element to these books.
