FRENCH PHONICS- Science of Reading Screener- Assessment Tool- FRENCH REPORTING

By La trousse de Madame

This assessment tool provides a tailored and effective method for evaluating and enhancing students' reading abilities, ultimately promoting literacy success in the French K-2 classroom. By incorporating the principles of the Science of Reading, this tool ensures a systematic and evidence-based approach to evaluating reading progress.

Phonemic awareness, which focuses on recognizing and manipulating individual sound in words, is integrated to improve French students' ability to decode and spell words accurately. Additionally, phonological awareness, which involves understanding the sound structure of language is emphasized to enhance overall language and reading skills.

I developed this with a dear friend long ago so we could easily keep track of our assessments for Kindergarten students. Flash forward a few years (many years, actually) and I have now been able to incorporate my knowledge of Science of Reading and concepts from the resources we use in our Province to assess students learning French in a variety of learning environments.

I now teach a group of Grade 1s and a group of Grade 2s and use this assessment tool 3 times a year! Game changer!

How to use this:

Make enough copies for each student in your classroom and assign an assessment binder for data collection.

I use the first two sheets at the beginning of the year in order to inform where my reading program needs to start.

Use the tool throughout the school year to chart progress and to see areas of concern

You can also start to see trends and areas of need where you may need to review certain sounds as a whole class or perhaps a small group.

What's in the resource?

- 8 Assessment pages

-simple sounds, alphabet sounds that are in random order

-les sons complexes: ou, on, an, in, oin, eu, au, eau, etc

-beginning blends: ba, pi, to, gu, etc.

-CVC combinations

-nonsense syllables that test the decoding skills of students once they have mastered the basic sounds and complex sounds

-data tracking boxes at the bottom of each page for three times a year of evaluation

-quick reference so you can track each students' trajectory

What grade level is appropriate?

I use this resource in my Grade 1 and 2 classrooms and our Kindergarten team use this resource at the end of term 1 and end of the year for data collection.

I would love to know how you are using this product in your classroom. Please feel free to contact me directly if you have anything to say about this resource. I love helping teachers as much as I can. A product review also is a great way of letting me know, and leaving a review earns you extra credit for more amazing TeachShare products!

Sight Word Scrambled Sentences&Cloze Sentences|First Grade Sight Word Activities

By The Teaching Resources Company

Once children can recognize and understand individual sight words in print, they are ready to use them to build sentences. This is the exciting next step in the reading process and, for many children, the moment when they say, “I’m really reading!” The following scrambled sentences build upon sight word knowledge and are designed to help children learn—and demonstrate—sentence sense by putting individual words into the correct order so each sentence makes sense. The sight words used in these sentences follow the order in which they have been introduced. The sentences can be used in a number of ways, depending on each child’s developmental level. First, encourage the child to look for helpful sentence-sense clues, such as a capitalized word that would indicate the beginning of the sentence and a word with punctuation that would indicate the end of the sentence. Then, have the child say all the words aloud, starting with the capitalized word and ending with the punctuated word. Ask the child if what he or she said aloud makes sense, and, if necessary, encourage him or her to rearrange the “middle” words around while saying them aloud until they are in the correct order. Then, have the child write the unscrambled sentence on the line provided. You may want to encourage the child to write the sentence’s sight words in different-colored crayons or markers, or to use the sight word flash cards to find the matching words used in the sentence. You may also want to have the child write the unscrambled sentence on a separate sheet of paper and cut it apart into individual words. Then, using the child’s hand-written unscrambled sentence in the worksheet as a model, have him or her reassemble the cut-apart words into the sentence. This activity works well as a self- checking review. Or have the child distribute the cut-apart words to other children, who can then reassemble them in the correct order. An activity of this type can also be used with sentences that the children dictate or write themselves on a separate sheet of paper. Extending this activity to sentences that children compose themselves increases their level of engagement and provides an opportunity for individualizing their learning.

Cloze sentences provide young learners an opportunity to use words in context and to gain a better understanding of sentence sense. Use the cloze sentences on the following pages for children to practice selecting the correct word from the word boxes to complete each sentence.

To extend the activity, have children create their own sentences with a missing word. The sentences can also be copied on a separate sheet of paper, cut apart, and reconstructed for sentence sense practice.

Figurative Language CENTERS: 8 Stations & 120 Quotations | Worksheets & Quizzes!

By Rigorous Resources for High School English

This FIGURATIVE LANGUAGE STATIONS activity is a fun and effective method for giving students practice at analyzing the most important types of figurative language. Students will develop the skills not only to identify types of figurative language but also to explain how figurative language contributes to the meaning of a literary text!

Students will learn about figurative language while gaining exposure to the most profound and thought-provoking quotations from the world's greatest writers! They'll be asked to analyze the figures of speech in over 120 inspiring quotations by a diverse range of important authors: Chinua Achebe, Louisa May Alcott, Maya Angelou, Jane Austen, James Baldwin, William Blake, Emily Dickinson, John Donne, Louise Erdrich, F. Scott Fitzgerald, Robert Frost, Zora Neale Hurston, John Keats, Harper Lee, Toni Morrison, George Orwell, Zadie Smith, John Steinbeck, Henry David Thoreau, Mark Twain, Oscar Wilde, Virginia Woolf, and many others.

This stations activity focuses on the 8 types of figurative language that are used most commonly in literature: metaphor, simile, metonymy, personification, apostrophe, paradox, oxymoron, and hyperbole.

Here's what you'll find inside this 40-page resource:

• Stations Worksheets (x8): This resource includes a total of 8 worksheets focused on 8 types of figurative language. Each worksheet challenges students to explain the meaning or effect created by the same figure of speech found across 6 quotations. The quotations include some of the most profound and thought-provoking lines from famous authors — a total of 48 quotations! (8 pages)

• Answer Keys to Stations Worksheets (x8): The answer keys explain how the figures of speech found across 48 quotations contribute to the meaning of the quotation. (8 pages)

• Station Placards (x8): The 8 placards can be folded and placed on the desks that correspond to the 8 stations. The placards add a splash of colorful decoration to this activity. (8 pages)

Literary Devices Glossary: This 1-page glossary features the 8 types of figurative language that are used most frequently in literature. The glossary includes definitions of the 8 types of figurative language as well as one or two examples of how each figure of speech gets used in famous quotations. Students can use the glossary to study in preparation for the quizzes on figurative language. (1 page)

• Quiz: Metaphors & Similes: This quiz focuses only on metaphors and similes; it challenges students to identify the figures of speech used across 15 famous quotations. Answer key included. (2 pages)

• Quiz: All Types of Figurative Language (x2): These two quizzes focus on all 8 types of figurative language. The first quiz challenges students to identity the figures of speech used across 25 quotations. The second quiz is similar but features 20 longer quotations; it could be used as a make-up quiz or extra-credit quiz. Answer keys included. (8 pages)

• Quiz: Figurative Language in Music: This quiz focuses on the types of figurative language used in 10 famous song lyrics by musicians such as The Beatles, Paul Simon, Elton John, John Legend, Beyoncé, and Taylor Swift. Answer key included. (2 pages)

Here are the types of figurative language featured across the 8 stations:

1. Metaphor

2. Simile

3. Metonymy

4. Personification

5. Apostrophe

6. Paradox

7. Oxymoron

8. Hyperbole

The entire 40-page resource will come to you in two separate formats: Word doc and PDF. Because the Word doc is fully editable, you'll be able to customize the materials to suit the skill levels of your particular students — year after year! If you don't have Microsoft Word, you'll still be able to access the entire resource as a PDF — which is easy to navigate and quick to print!

I'm eager to do everything I can to ensure that you have an amazing experience with figurative language! If you have any questions along the way, please don't hesitate to get in touch!

FICHES DE LECTURE/READING ASSESSMENT/BENCHMARK | COMPLEX SOUND/SONS (FRENCH)

By French Made Fun!

My "big" kids in grades 5 and 6 have been struggling with their French sounds - both basic and complex - and we're backtracking! However, because of their unique needs, I was struggling to find texts at their level that featured these complex sounds - in excess - for them to practice, see in real life and to work with them in guided readings or 1:1. I was finding myself scouring my shelves for books that had ample opportunities for them to see and practice a certain sound and wasn't having success; so I decided to create texts that hone in on specific sound formations they're struggling with, have never properly learned, or have forgotten. They are texts which feature vocabulary at the grade 5-6 instructional level.

I was also tired of running back and forth from my literacy lab to find reading records and wanted to have them printable from my classroom. If you're in a similar boat, this is the product for you!

This collection features 44 pages of resources:

- 12 texts (student version to be printed and used in small groups or 1:1)

- 12 texts (teachable version with sounds highlighted, or for differentiated instruction)

- 12 "fiches" to use as a fiche d'observation/fiche d'évaluation en littératie in a 1:1 setting featuring columns you're used to seeing (Erreurs, autocorrections, S | St | V strategies, Fluidité, Date, Nom de l'évaluateur et nom de l'élève). I've also provided you with a handy accuracy calculator so you don't need to pull out your calculator for each individual text. Circle the number of errors and you'll be given their accuracy percentage. Each text features comprehension questions.

The sounds and textual features you'll see featured in these series of texts include:

  • -ais, -ait, -aient, -ent, -ment, -ant, -ante (suffixes)
  • -i, -ui, -ier, -ierre, -air, -ien, -ain, -oi, -ieu, -in, -ie (bases et suffixes)
  • -i, -ie, ié -is, -it, -eille, -ay, -oi , -io (bases et suffixes)
  • -ai, -ou, -eu, -oi, -io, -ui, -ue, -eau, -ie (bases et suffixes)
  • les sons muets: -t, -s, -d, -ent, h, -c (suffixes - sauf le "h")
  • apostrophes et traits d’union
  • -e muet et non-muet (suffixes)
  • Adjectifs masculins, féminins et pluriels (suffixes)

For goodness sakes, don't forget to have fun!

Fiction and nonfiction fluency with retell

By Basic Biz Teaching

Do you students work on fluency? If your answer is yes, then this product is for you!

My students have been absolutely obsessed with rainbows this year, so I gave this common retell practice a makeover by adding a simple splash of color! Let me just say… my students LOVED IT!

I use this product in both whole group and small group settings!! Curious? Here's how!

Whole group:

While reading our Wonders weekly stories, my students will be asked to turn to their partners and give a retell of the story. Sometimes we do this after each page, sometimes halfway through the story, sometimes after we're done. Why? My kids have learned quickly to pay attention to what we're reading because you never know when a partner retell is coming!

Small group:

Mondays are fluency day in our class!

First, we discuss what type of text we're reading based on the title. We get our partners and quickly decide who's reading first and who's giving feedback first. After the minute timer goes off, the reading partner uses the printout as a guide for their retell based on if the story is fiction or nonfiction. Feedback partner listens and uses to rubric and dry erase markers (we keep ours in our sheet protectors to cut down on copies).

It's been a great experience!
